Tell us EXACTLY what you did when you fitted the new rad, if that's all you did to it.

yep changed the raditator near exactly as said in the Haynes manual. It worked great the following day. But the day after i started it up in the morning and it just sounded awful....raspy sound and drived particularly shakey and uneven until reved really hard.....cruising at about 60 it sounds ok but looses power up any hill....If there was a probelm with the bores/pistons wouldnt it have shown up on the spark plugs? The electrics seem ok and checked so i guess I will send it in to the garage for a 'proff' look over unless there are any other 'lead' i guess....will keep you posted!

sounds like points and condenser in dizzy to me.

My micra did it for weeks, then gave up completely. Turned out to be poor points and condenser.

Rather than randomly replacing parts, review in your head everything you could have possible changed during your DIY work. You've replaced or cleaned wires and plugs... did you give the dizzy cap a complete examination? Hairline cracks in a dizzy cap will short out your sparks. Is there any chance you bumped the dizzy and it was loose enough to change the timing? Lastly, though it's harder to accidentally change settings on the carb(s) is there any chance you bumped the jets? I also like the idea of checking the points and condenser. Make sure the points completely open and aren't too badly pitted. You can run the car briefly with the condenser removed to test if it's bad. DON'T leave the condenser out long-term as you'll burn the points very quickly without it.

Thanks a lot guys..ill try it out. i didnt go anywhere near the dizzy when replacing the radiator.......may have gone close to the carb though so I will just eliminate the condenser and points thing first....thanks again! :P

is it something as easy and simple as timing...i had the same problem after changing my points....it wouldn't go above fifty....hills? not a chance!!!...coughing and spluttering like a beetle....you betcha! found that as i had changed the points, the timing was way way out. ended turning it over a quater of a turn.

My clubman sounds exactly the same as you describe yours!

Firstly my exhaust manifold to downpipe is blowing and secondly my timing is miles out, thus sounding like a beetle and only running well when revved hard + seems to quieten down at around 50mph.

Does it by any chance run on when you turn the ignition off? (does it keep runnin for a short time after you turn the key off?)
