I'm planning to get an zx10r engine in the front of my mini. I have the engine already, but that's all :ermm:
It's a 2004 engine with +-5000km's
I don't know what kind of diff i gonna use, not a quaife( to expensive)...

I would want to know what diffs and driveshafts they use on other projects.
Will the mini-driveshafts hold that much power...
The mini is now still fitted with drum breaks in the front, so that must change for sure. But i first need to know if some mini driveshafts fit a other cars differential.
Otherwis i will mount the whole connection to wheels-driveshafts from an other car.

The project will last for e while i think :)

here are some pics of the engine and the car(what's left of it)

Hello Jonas,
Interesting project, I take it from your description you are going to build a front wheel drive car? I'm doing something similiar using the R1 engine, the outer Cv's from a 8.4 disc braked mini I believe are up to the job. Most people (that means probably less than 10 at the moment) are using the standard mini setup except for a 4 pin diff or a lsd heavily modded to mount in bearings and some sort of can to cover the diff and hold oil.

There is no other diff that will fit directly to the mini driveshafts, I'm using a quaife atb and custom made steel driveshafts to fit standard outer 8.4 disc braked CV's, I would suggest with more than 150 hp at the wheels its worth fitting a lsd diff

How do you intend driving the diff?

Cheers
David

Thanks!
The outer cv joint of a 8.4"disc brake isnt the same as the one for a 7"disc?
I can't use my 10 inch wheels then.. If i take 13 inch wheels or so , then the sprocket on the diff must be large because i want the top speed of the mini at about 180km/h...
And if that sprocket becomes to large in diameter i haven't the space to fit it. You understand?

I maybe use the diff and inner cv's of an volkswagen golf turbodiesel because i have all the parts here.
I would weld the 2 driveshafts together( 1 mini-1 golf), or isnt that a good option?
The diff of the golf hasn't much place at the side of the crownwheel to fit the bearing so this could be a problem.

Here they are using a sierra 1800 diff, but i will not have the space to make something like that to hold the diff in place.

The CV on the 7" disc is based on the small drum braked mini setup and uses the small CV, you need the the 8.4 disc braked mini setup which as standard uses a 12" wheel, you can use 10" wheels on this setup if you buy special brakes and machined down discs, usually 7.9 but some 10" wheels won't clear and you may need to use the 7.5 setup, check with someone like minisport

I totally understand your problem and this is my solution I extended the front at least 3.5 although it may end up at 4.5 to give a bit more clearance for the exhaust which is also tight

The VW diff is apparently a good one to use, the Sierra is fine also they are both similiar in size, there is no problem joining driveshafts providing it's done well, I prefer the custom made steel driveshafts which aren't that expensive to get made

Cheers

I'll try to find the hubs, discs, outer cv's and driveshafts from an 8.4 setup.
If i don't find them for e reasonable price i maby try to fit the whole assembly of the wheel hubs and everything from an other car, maybe golf of escort, but then i must fit other wheels(minimum 13inch) and with an other ... (don't know the word in english) for example 4*100mm as the mini has 4*101,6mm orso.
The car needs to get on the road as well so here in Belgium i don't know how i'm gonna do that :)

R1mini, will your mini be for the road or the track? Do you need to register it as e new car from 2008 or keeps it it's original build date?

It will remain on the original plate 1974, it will be road registered and used on Trackdays and such like

So where you live you can make such changes to a car with "no" problems.
I've heard some stories around here to export the car from Belgium to England or Germany and do the expection there, and then import the car back to Belgium...
I don't know how i'm gonna do that because for england i must go over sea and i don't have a boat :)
I first need to know better what the possibilities are for me if i want to get it road legal.

bye

I'm based in Hampshire UK, I have no idea about what you would need to do in Belgium to get a car like this road legal

I wouldn't be confident using 10 inch wheels - only because you can't get a big enough brake disk under them to cope with the kwaka's power.

You''ll probably be right. But then i have to go with a big sprocket attached to the diff and i don't think i have the place for that.
I don't want the mini to run speeds of 200km/h+ because i want it for quick accelerations.
I will look for the smallest sprocket for the engine.
