How easy is it to spray panels? From start to finish, as i have no experience whatsoever! Because i was thinking about buying a brand new bonnet spraying it solar red and spraying the cooper stripes on it. Is this doable as i have no previous experience with this?

Cheers people,

Ed

before i forget cooper stripes are usually stuck on rather than sprayed i think.

not as simple as just spraying because youll have to sand down the old one, use primer, paint then prob. lacquer, sanding at various stages so youll need at least shedloads of different grades of wet and dry paper. And to get best results you'll need a small air compressor and spray gun and buy the paint plus cellulose thinners, or for a bonnet you could probably make do with aerosols so you wont need a compressor.
Just make sure everything is really clean around you, do it indoors (well, in a garage) make sure theres no dust, practice on scrap panels first and remember the preparation (sanding, filling etc) is at least as important as the top coat of paint.

Its not hard to spray paint but as with everything its useful to practice and above all dont rush, esp. on the preparation.

good luck!

Or you could try and find a second hand bonnet the right colour , buy the stick-on stripes and save a lot of hassle
unless your mini is a special colour ?

Why not go half and half - just have one bonnet stripe! :)
Or, get a spare bonnet and have one bonnet with stripes and one without and change them over when you're in the mood!

Bit off topic (sorry) but i saw a cooper with both stripes on one side of the bonnet, looked really original and quite good imo

To be honest i wouldnt try to do the spraying yourself unless you have the equipment and experience, getting a decent finish isnt as easy as it may seem and im sure you want it to look good. If its only the bonnet you want spraying it wouldnt cost that much to get it done professionally (well not at the garage work at anyway, talk about a plug lol)

We all gotta start someware, the nack is enough paint to cover with no orange peel effect but not too much that it runs or sags, you can't buy experience or practice. If using a can treat it like a gun start it off panel then sweep onto the panel whilst paint stream is in full jet. Preparation is the key the paint sinks down to the metal so if the marks there in the start it's always gonna be there. Loads of books about it and even a bit in most Haynes manuals. Nothing like the buzz of getting a mirror finish on your own though.

Get a couple of cans and have a bash on a bit of scrap plate. Good luck Mate

I managed to aquire a second hand rusty Mini bonnet, unfortunatly it is from an older mini so wont fit my car. I am hoping to spray this soon to practice and was wondering what i would need to do this? And also what type of paint is the easiest to use for a beginer like me?

Cheers
Ed
