might be...
i think it's some kind of personal philosophy... there are the same number of guys racing single exit exhausts that i may quote.
science also says that the tube should be longer. therefore a side exit would even give some milliHP more... :P science explains that... and an apple still falls down to the ground if you let it fall... even if most people race centre exit exhausts...

personal preference...

and to be honest... those marginal differences that are there... our everyday driver engines have so many little out-of-tune things in there... we never can say we really feel these marginal differences... we bolt a new exhaust on for various reasons, it looks good and it sounds good (to mention the two main things) some even have arguments about different materials :cheese: ... these are the things that make us believe the exhaust works better... ("sounds mighty! surely gives a quarter HP more...")

just personal preference...

....Ive got an RC40 DTM on mine....

DTM and RC40 are types of exhaust, as far as I'm aware you can't have a DTM which is an RC40, the same as a MANIFLOW is not and RC40.

by the way, I have a 1.7/8" Maniflow side exit twin box, and its a beaut..

My exhaust is an RC40 millenium exhaust that I beleive is available from Minispares. The back box has RC40 stamped on it and the quality is second to none.

I was looking at that but after seeing one on a car, I think too much of it is visible and it looks odd. Like the whole system is hanging a long way down from the car.

Having just got my 96 Cooper I needed to replace the exhaust as most of it is rusting. I phoned Mini Spares and they recommended an RC40-053 as the most popular tail pipe in s/s. So I took their advice and ordered it. It is a 2.25" side exit large bore. Having read this thread though the general advice seems to be that I should have gone for a standard 1.75" bore? Do you think I should change my order before it is despatched - after all, it is £75 worth of tailpipe and I want to get it right. Would welcome some advice thanks.

i think you will find its just the very back bit of the exhaust (tail pipe )that is 2.25"
the rest of the system is 1.75"

so its allright to keep

did you go for single box or twin box

Oh ok thanks. I'm only learning; early days! It was a single they recommended I believe . I asked for improved performance over noise level. So I'll keep it then, although I have been investigating their catalogue further and discovered that a mild steel standard bore would have cost me £40 less. So what is the benefit of the larger tailpipe - is it just looks?

tha larger tail pipe is just for looks

the single box is a bit loud and there is no real performance differance between single or twin

on my mini i have the s/s rc 40 single box side exit with the big tail pipe

Thanks Bungle. If its a bit loud you may hear me sometime, when back home I reside in sunny Cornwall aswell. I'll have to get me a St Pirans flag too! All the best.

I bought a single box centre exit 1.75 Maniflow stage 1 with a cone filter at L2B, can't wait to fit it!
I wanted noise mainly, thats why i got the single box and cone (instead of just an element). What differences am i likely to get? Can i expect much more power from an otherwise standard 998?

I have the same setup but mine is a side exit. Its quite loud but not overly. It needs about 3500 revs before you start to hear it. My mate has the same kind of thing, but a 2" backbox and it makes a big difference to the amount of noise you get! Admittedly mine is great when you don't want noise, in 3rd and 4th around town not booting it its barely audible, apart from a nice deep Buuuurrrr when you intitially press down on the gas.

If its a stage one kit you'll get a big difference. I noticed with mine it was great up hills, actually pulling really well. The engine as a whole is way more responsive and quicker with the increased torque. There is a stretch of road where everyone used to burn up until they put mobile speed vans there. I used to hit 55, 60 max... can do 70 up there now. hehe. damn speed vans though.

Make sure you put everything on all in one go... otherwise you wont feel the benefit. Admittedly its much better than standard but you get used to it... I want more power now and I find it lacking sheer grunt. its nippy, but not fast. Defo worth the outlay though.

To give you an idea of comparitive speed - my friend got a courtesy car from ford, a brand new 1.25 zetec fiesta.. and we were level until 70, then he was pulling a way, the 1.4's *yellow human water* over me, sob sob.

Hope that helps! TML

just a thought about twin box systems...

if you live in an area with speedbumps i'm strongly recommending a single box system... :cheese:

WOW!! That sounds great! hopefully be fitting it all soon! I've got the AAU needle to go in as well. Will it need much re-tuning after fitting? I probably won't be able to rolling road it because i don't think there is one near me! what will need setting?

With a mini a good tuner won't need to rolling road it. As far as I am aware with something like a 998 with a stage one, putting it on the rollers would gain such a nominal amount over it being tuned without a road it is not worth it.

saying that though where I took mine he said rather than 40 quid I'll let you go on it for 20 as my mate wanted to know what bhp I got... 37bhp at the wheels... I dont really know what this is at the flywheel though apart from the popular but inaccurate rule of flywheel power minus a third = power at the wheels, which would have my flywheel at 54bhp. He couldnt get more out of it using the road.

Something like a tuned 1330/1380 would benefit but its not necassary at our cars kind of level
