oops sorry my mistake!
I guess any sort of modification to improve power reduces reliability to some extent, altho i think in the case of these mods they'd be minor enough not to make a significant difference.
But like I say Im no expert!!

This is another thing ive been thinking about. I was going to fit an ultimate engine steady anyway, but should I do anything else to the engine to prepare for the extra power?
Ive heard a center main strap, and an extra oil pickup in the gearbox are good Ideas, anything else worth considering?

I have just found this very cool chart, it seems to show mods and an approximate bhp. There is a 998 with twin carbs, piper 285 cam and stage 3 head getting 80bhp!! . Hmmm interesting, I wonder what else had been done to the engine, and how it performs around town etc.

In a few months time i may have a polished and ported 998 head for sale then you'd need to get the valves resized an u got urself a nice head there? Its currently in use on my engine however in on the lookout for an MG 1275

Bill Solis used to race 850's with 80+ bhp...

I kinda got lost in all the back and forward stuff going on here, but if you want to improve the power of a 998 fit a stage one for starters. Twin carbs, hmm, I'd say no because they are a pain in the arse, but thats my opinion. Although I can say one thing, there is no real benefit from 2 carbs as only one cylinder draws fuel at a time anyway.
Following the stage one, then I would sugest a skim on the head to get the C/R up a bit, or even pocketing your block and fitting a 1275 head. You could fit a mild cam, but nothing too hot as the 998 can't cope with them.

In reallity, your never going to get good power figures and a super fast car with a 998 without it becoming mega unreliable because of all the mods you need to do to it to get the power. If you want more power as standard, then your as well to swap the whole lot for a 1275. Its double the power for a fraction of the cost, and I recon mr insurance man would charge you less for having a fairly standard 1275 engine than a fully modded 998.
