This guide assumes you have a hole in the fuel line at the back of the car, this is the most common place to develop a leak, typically at one of the corners where the metal line goes up and over the rear subframe.

Time required : About 1hr

Total cost : £2.00 (for the clips + length of hose)

Tools / parts required :

Jack & Axle stands, or ramps.
Couple of bits of wood as chocks.
Hacksaw
Flat screwdriver
Pair of molegrips
Pair of pliers
A fine metal file
A piece of paper
A length of fuel hose
A couple of jubilee clips

1) Start the job only when the exhaust is cool to the touch.
2) Jack the rear of the car and support it on axle stands, (or reverse up the ramps). Leave it in first gear and chock the front wheels.
3) Working under the car, use the mole grips to clamp the rubber fuel hose as it comes through the boot floor, using bits of paper (about 4 ply on each side of the jaws) to prevent damage to the hose.
4) Undo the jubilee clip where the fuel hose enters the metal pipeline, and remove the fuel hose from the pipe.
4b) If at this point you are getting very wet, you havent clamped the fuel line correctly.
5) Prise the metal guide clips away from the floor of the car, boot floor and back panel thus freeing the metal pipeline. Retain the rubber protectors.
6) Using the pliers, hold the metal pipeline away from the floor a little and cut the line using the hacksaw.
7) Remove the bit of pipeline you just cut off, some wrangling will be required to get it around the subframe. Put to one side.
8) Remove any sharp edges of the remaining line using a file.
9) Feed your rubber hose along the path where the metal line was, then cut it with the hacksaw to the right size.
10) Pass a jubilee clip over the hose and attach the hose to the line under the floor, passing it over the line about an inch, then tighten up the clip.
11) Get out from under the car + cut a couple of inch length of (the cleanest bit) the metal pipe you just pulled out, file smooth.
12) Back under + shove the pipe into the tank hose about an inch and tighten the jubilee clip. Then the other end into the new bit of pipe and tighten the remaining clip.
13) Push the metal guide clips back ensuring the hose / pipe has the rubber protectors around.
14) Remove the mole grips from the fuel hose.
15) Lower the car off the stands / ramp.

Worthy of note : Do not stop and have a smoke under the car.
Also worthy of note : Eye protectors are a good idea to stop bits of rust and fuel getting in your eyes.
