I Beleive the 'S' stands for sports pack and i think the main differences are the S will have larger 13 inch wheels with wider sportspack arches also i think the interior is slightly sportier, not sure of any differences on the engine maybe someone else can shed some light on this.

nope. the cooper 's' goes right back to the early years.

Sportspack are sportspack. Later 90's cars.

The differences i dont know, but i guess engine and brakes were different.

Cooper 'S' engines go for loads on ebay and 7.5 cooper 's' brakes same.

the old 60s coopers had a bore of (i think) 73mm and by changing the cranks you got
970
1071
1275

before this the coopers were

997
998

the later coopers like mini were all 1275cc the s pack was an extra from john cooper garages that could be fitted by rover

on the carb mini it was

twin carbs 1 1/4
moded head
jan speed exhaust

later cars 1.3 i had

moded head
jan speed exhaust

they then did a conrverson with 5 speed gear box and or 1380cc

the sports pack was just 13 inch wheels and bigger arches

When you are talking Cooper vs Cooper S anything newer than 1970 is neither, just some rover rebranding ( rant 1 over ! )

The "S" stands for SPORT.

The rest I'll leave upto a friend....

I've got a 1995 Cooper S - proper conversion with conversion plate screwed into floor from John Cooper garages. (1.3i)

I'm no mechanic/technical bod but I know it kicks ass next to a standard cooper.

The conversion gets a new cylinder head, oil cooler and exhaust system. Boosting power from 63bhp (standard cooper) to 83bhp on the spi. I think the more recent mpi conversion is more. Top speed over 100. I did get mine to 110 - but then the other half was looking decidedly ill in the passenger seat. :)

The BMC "S" and the Rover "S" were very different as you'd expect with almost two decades of separation between them. As GuessWorks said, the biggest changes to the early "S" were the larger (7.5") disk brakes (with servo) and the more powerful engines (970, 1071, and 1275). Post 1966 the "S" got twin tanks and an oil cooler as standard. The "S" gearbox also used the remote-shift housing and close ratio gears. The wheel rims were a little wider on the "S" and the rear brake drums had a built-in spacer. The trim inside the Cooper and "S" was a little higher than on the standard and deluxe Minis of the period. Noise and leaks came standard on all models.

There is no Rover Cooper S, the late S pack was only fitted by John Cooper Garages as an upgrade. John Cooper Garages is not and never was a part of Rover.

The original and best Cooper S was as described very well by DK, but the 'S' doesn't mean anything at all. It simply stands for S. Not sport, not special, nothing. It's all just marketing! This was what Jack Daniels maintained about the S until he sadly died recently.
