As GuessWorks said, the biggest changes to the early "S" were the larger (7.5") disk brakes (with servo)

or infact the presence of disks at all, as all other 12" mini's had drums all round. did they not?

998Dave, the original "Cooper" did not use drums in the front but 7" disks. So, both the Cooper and the S had disk brakes. The larger S brakes have always been recognized as delivering better performance.

As far as the 12" wheel cars, I can't say, that was after my time. However, I know that several people in the U.S. have imported reshelled Minis that run on 12" wheels and I'm fairly certain their reason for this was to run the larger 8.4" disk brakes. I'd assume therefore that some of the 12" Minis in the U.K. must have had disks. What about the late 1275-GTs and some of the Clubman(s)?
