Hi all,
I've got oil pouring (no exaggeration) out of my output shaft seals and I've managed to replace the nearside one, which half cured it, but I just can't get the pot joint off the offside output shaft, has anyone got any tips? I'm actually using the Rover 'wedge' tool, but I can hammer it all the way in until it's touching the shaft itself, and it still doesn't release. The nearside one came off with the first whack. I think the retaining circlip may be damaged and locking the pot joint to the shaft. I tried using a chisel but chipped a small bit off the gearbox casing so I'm reluctant to continue that method!
Andy ideas? Thanks. Andy.

a soft face plastic or rubber mallet and bash it.

as far as i can tell you have to strip down the gearbox if it doesn't come out, i have had some difficult ones in the past, but using a plastic mallet or a good block of wood as a punch they have all come out...

I use a fork type ball joint splitter and hammer it up between the 'box and joint. Never had a problem doing them that way and would put them near the bottom of the 'pain in the ass jobs on a mini' list :)

I use a long wrecking bar between the housing and pot, but if you're not carful you can damage the cover...

Also get the car as High as you can, give yourself plenty of room, failing that then its engine out and split the gearbox.

I use a tool my dad made for my mums mini years ago its simply an oblong piece of metal with a U shape in one end to fit behind the cup and it has a smaller piece of metal screwed to it that sits on one of the sideplate bolts and acts as a pivot all u do is bash the other end with a large hammer and hey presto. It takes a bit of welly but this method has never failed for me and i've had em out enough times. Its when the drive shafts get stuck in the pots that you have real problems.

Will try and get a piccy later u could make one in 10 mins with the right tools.
