Just a "quickie"
groan
oo-er
Do I have to remove the rod change from the gearbox (the fiddly bit with the roll pin) to remove or install a quickshift?
cheers

You don't HAVE to. But it is a lot easier. Depending on what type of quickshift it is really. With the new KAD reverse collar quickshift I found it easier to remove the whole rod change unit, fit the quickshift, then put it back on. Everything comes off pretty easy, just make sure you have the right punch for the roll pins, its also the perfect opportunity to replace the gear selector shaft seal.

Hope that helps!

Yes its pretty obvious how it comes out. Make sure both cars have rod change and that one isn't an earlier model with the remote housing.

The only thing you may have trouble with is the top rod steady bolt. Sometimes they either sieze in the bush, or the exhaust downpipe won't let you withdraw the bolt enough to get the top rod off. I solved this by simply levering the downpipe away from the bolt with a long lever, although you may find it easier to remove the exhaust system, depending what sort you have fitted.

well my exhaust system is currently of the lying-on-the-floor-somewhere-away-from-the-car type, so shouldnt have any probs there! :(
Thanks v much for the advice. will tackle it later today!

the two roll pins on the top of the gear change either come out easily....or are a right bugger to get out. have done this twice with the gear change still in the car....if they don't come out then i have put the quick shift over the gear change and tightened the two bolts up...this should push the two roll pins in....just hold them with a pair of long nosed pliers to stop them falling in to the gear change mech.

thanks for the tips, all sorted pretty simply now. The prev owner had in fact just put the screws in like grub screws so they didnt fit into the holes left by the roll pins...duh...
something strangely satisfying about being able to take out the gearstick....anti theft device perhaps?

Can you explain? Can you remove the gearstick from inside the car if fitted with KAD quickshift?

Very interested in this :(

no you can only do it with the standard gearstick. The KAD type is held in by two small bolts.

You need to make sure there isn't a gaitor over the stick thats screwed into the tunnel first. Remove that, so you can see down onto the floor. All you do is push down against the spring on the spherical shaped dome that holds the stick (you'll see what I mean), turn it anti clockwise, and it will lift out!

If you take the gaitor off but leave the carpet in place then you can just lift the carpet to remove the stick. There'll be more road noise though!

you could leave the gaiter on and just do away with the frame thing thats held in place with 4 screws, surely? as minis84 says then just push down and turn the little dome thing, just like undoing a bayonet light bulb, then use the gearstick to clobber to death the scum thats trying to nick your mini!!
Hmmm maybe i should patent this idea. Im sure with the right set up (quick release frame thing with wingnuts and holes elongated to edges so turn wingnut then slide it off, it could take less time than fitting a stoplock?!!
Anti-theft device - detachable gearstick conversion - coming to ebay soon! Watch this space!! (maybe...)
prob not so good to leave the gearchange mechanism open to dirt, bits of carpet, pens, fluffy dice etc falling in tho....

if you made a modified rod change housing, or a convertor that fitted over the standard housing then you could have angled pins in different locations around the circular part, so even if someone with a standard gearstick came along to try to nick it then it wouldn't fit in. Similar to the removable steering wheel bosses.
