any ideas what i can do to remove the half of nipple thats stuck in the caliper?

am i going to need to ream out a new thread and replace it?

I had that prob with one of mine once. I took it to my engineers and they took it out for free for me. They said they heated it up and used an easy-out.

If a shop can do it for a reasonable price... that is the best way to go. I screwed up a caliper very nicely myself trying to do this (regular cast iron job... not the nice one you have). Keep in mind that if you have to re-tap this yourself it has to be directly inline with the old seat or the new nipple won't seal.

Someone on this site posted a nice bandaid fix that I'll try next time if I have to salvage a caliper. After re-tapping the hole for the nipple, grind the point off the new bleed nipple, leaving it shorter and flat faced. Drop a small steel ball from a ball bearing into the bleed hole and follow it with the flat faced nipple. The ball will seal the hole even if it's drilled off center.

I wish I could take credit for the fix, someone else on this forum posted the idea a few months back. Unfortunately for me the advice came after I'd installed a repair kit in my caliper. I don't know if you have this kit over there but it's a pipe bushing/plug with a bleed nipple in it. You tap out your caliper for this bushing/plug and install the repair kit complete with nipple. Sounds easy... but the thing deforms on installation requiring additional tinkering to seal. The ball bearing trick would have saved me a lot of work!

an easier fix again !!
if u have a mig welder weld a couple of spots on top of the broken nipple building it out on till u can get a vice grips onto it being careful not to weld the nipple to the caliper
it works a treat as i did the exact same last week the heat of the welder helps with some wd 40
remember to turn the welder up as u need it to penatrate the nipple u will know when it right as the first couple of attempts the weld will probably break of but when it penatrated it will come right out

I've still got to remove a nipple from my alloy calipers, if I can't sraw it out with and extractor, may go for that option...

I always put a nut over the broken stud/nipple and then weld the inside of the nut to the broken off end , the heat works well and you can use a spanner to ease it out , sometimes this needsto be done several times to get it all .
