My fan belt is knackered and peeling off :gasp:
this explains the mysterious overheating problems ive been having.
its booked into the garage tomorrow.
how much does it cost for a new fan belt?
possibly a new radiator too :erm:

I dunno but I bet the garage makes that noise when you take it in! You know the sucky noise all mechanics make before they say "OOOOh, can't do nuffin til monday".
But seriously, it really could vary from £20 for the belt and fitting to £100 or more if you need a radiator too.
Disclaimer: That's just a guess based on prior knowledge!

Fan belts are something like £5(thats how much is cost me to get one for my dads combi van), but if you are getting a garage to do it, then they will most probably charge you top dollar to do it, so you have gotta be looking at £40 fitted?!?
Can't you fit it yourself?!? all you have to do is slacken the alternator bolts, and maybe move the radiator?! n take the fan off!?!
What did they say was wrong with the radiator?

fit it yourself! it's only slackening off 3 bolts and a little time to feed the belt around the fan! Belts are about £5 from halfords!
Seriously, it's one of the easiest jobs to do in a mini!

The shop I work will only charge for the belt and 10 minutes for fitting so that would be running you about 15 pounds.

Remeber this is rip off britain!!
seriously tho MCM, what could go wrong? If you do it this once, then you know how to do it all the other times a fan belt goes in the future which is MORE than likely is what is going to happen, thats how i see it. So not only are you saving urself a packet now, but in the long run also!! Isn't labour charges more in Kent than where i am in the midlands?
I done the balljoints on my mini the other day, i use to allways get a family mechanic to do it, but then i thought what the heck, i've got the tools, why don't i do it myself. and it was a doddle! so now i kno how to do them without resulting to the haynes, and i can help fellow mini friends out in the future!

do it yourself! i had never done one before, then i HAD to do mine at the side of the road! nine snapped completely after it had been slipping every now and again. luckyly i had one in the back! cost £.80 i think from halfords! then took 10/15 mins to do! pas it over each blade and take the grill of to adjust the alternator! it really is simple. i would guess a garage would charge £30 to change the belt after parts, labour and tax (only a guess). try yourself, then go garage as last resort!

with A levels coming up, coursework to be in and a part time job of 15-20hrs a week. I still have time to do jobs on the mini....
It is so easy and you could do it in a college dinner break if you had tools with you. Get a mate to help if u dont like muck

fixed but the garage found a small leak at the back of the engine, which they said if doesnt get welded up, may get larger and could only be fixed by removing the engine
