I have a 998cc mini with a stage one kit and have recently acquired some twin carbs but have received mixed views on whether or not i should fit them.
Some people say that they need a lot of maintenance and altough i am willing to learn how to maintain them, still say they are not worth the hassle.
On the other hand there is the view that my mini will go like s**t ... stick em on, u only have to balance them every once in a while... so what!
I have been told that they are in fair condition and but think i am edgin towards selling them and not fittin them...
what do you all reckon??

A few myths to clear up here. Firstly despite what insurance companies think, adding an extra carb will in itself do very little for your engines output. The stage 1 kit you already have has done a lot to improve your engine's breathing, adding an extra carb will basically only improve it's smoothness and throttle response.
Twin carbs don't need exceptional maintenance, provided they are setup right in the first place. Personally I find them to be exceptionally driveable and responsive and think they are very worth it, but to really see the difference in your engine you will have to carry out other improvements or you just won't be getting the best out of them.
Oh and while I remember, insurance companies in general have a dislike of twin carbs because of the myths of them releasing extra power.

My mate fitted twin SUs(3 branch and a big bore) on his 998 and had the local garage "tune it up" all it did was drink petrol , wasent any faster , switched to a single on an alloy innlet ,tuned it himself, much better .
but of corse , the only way to know for sure is try it , you can allways switch back if you dont like it

Id go for them if they are 1.25s but any bigger and I bet youll have problems. You do really want somebody in the know to tune them up though on a rolling road.

if you have bought them used, than the definite first step is to invest in a complete rebuild kit!
afterwards there will be better fuel consumption, engine runs smoother (but not necessarily quicker, just more lively as already mentioned)...
get them set up properly instead of messying around by yourself. once you've got them set up future maintenance is not much to do, provided you have them rebuilt first(!)...
standard 998 only works well with 1.25" twins. more power you'll get only if you fit bigger valves at the same time.
i would say it's worth putting them on...

Twin carbs also help better with fuel/air distribution, otherwise, due to momentum the outer two cylinders get slightly more air/fuel then the inner two. (Vizard).
They are a pain to balance, but only need doing occasionally.
However, also according to Vizard, a good single carb will be better for your engine then a pair. After all, they stuck a single HIF44 on the MG Metro and got far better power than on any of the twin carb cars before.
Lastly thought, they do look cool. And may be beneficial in the future.
I think I've cleared nothing up there, well done me...

HIF44 on a 988 would be overkill.
you only want a HIF38 on a 998cc.
