Fuel consumption shouldnt go up as the engine only draws on one cylinder at a time, so only one carb is in use at one time. Maintenance wise, unless you buy a full service kit and new linkages to make sure they are not worn before you put them on, then you will wish you never botherred.

Stick to a simple single carb, its only a 998 after all.

As you said they're 1.25s, they were ment to be on your car. The Hif 44 is just to big for the ports and just over fuels it unless its well tuned and revs highly. 1.5inch is fine but you know twins look better and sound better. I would rebuild them however which is fairly easy unless the spindel is worn.(In which case a pillar drill is needed) I personaly started tuning my 1000 last year by knife edging the butterfly on my 1.5, filling the screws down on it then putting a very small drop of loctite on them and finaly put a small ram pipe which I found gave me the biggest gain. After a bit of setting up, it drove smoother, revved more freely and gave me a bit more lbs/ft torque. Though if youve got 1.25s do the same to them and you may find they give better results than what I got.
