Ok

Just taken the mini out for a run after work, and after leaning the mixture quite a bit as it was running well rich, we took it up to a steady 70mph (after hard acceleration) all was fine didnt complain atall - Till we got home. sat it in the driveway at idle to adjust the idle speed and heard an ugly noise comming from gearbox/clutch housing. Was a sort of knocking tapping noise hard to explain really. But after a clutch rebuild naturally i was carping myself thinking ive really f***ed it now!!

So has anyone got any suggestions? The noise stops when clutch is depressed and its currently stopped altogether but should i be concerned?

Thanks.

Its very down on power to start with (even with a stage 1) mainly due to mixture (hence why i took it for a run after a quick adjust) and worn bores - New engine build comming up in next few months so new clutch going in then anyway. But it wasnt down on power (any more than usual) idle speed kept dropping but that was mainly due to a lean mix.

Just got me worried!

>_<

Taper Boss? We got a new friction plate and put it in between the flywheel and pressure plate via 8 bolts. Looked in haynes and saw: "pressure plate to flywheel bolts - 18lbf ft". which seemed about right as taking the bolts out i did with a small 1/4" socket set. All torqued up right sequence as per haynes and centre bolt done up to 112lbf ft.

It is a verto clutch by the way.

did you replace the throw out bearing when you did the clutch? usually noises that go away with the clutch depressed are related to throwout bearings going bad.

It could be a possibility that your drop hears have gone, my mate is having a similar problem with his mini right now, he thought it was the throw out bearing but upon removal all was fine but the drop gears were a little bit worse for wear....

Like yourself the noise went when the clutch was pressed....

Are you having any kind of trouble getting it into gears at all?

Im no expert but thats very similar symptons as my mates car, he had no trouble getting it into gear's (where as when my bearing went i couldnt get it in gears without crunching) sounds to me like it could be the drop's or one of the bearings for the drop gears are goosed....see if anyone else is of the same oppinion as myself

sounds similar to mine. i had no noise from mine until i took the engine out to do the cam followers. built it back up and ever since i have had a knocking noise from the bell houseing. took the clutch out and put it back in thinking it was that but no diffrence. mine goes when you give it a slight bit of throttle or press the clutch. i was told it was back lash in the transfer gear (straight cuts) and nothing to worry about? why it only started doing it after the rebuild i don't know. I saw a old cooper s today actually and that was doing the same.

Strange... Took it on the same route today and no problems.

The other engine is getting rebored now so if it holds out a few months im not too worried.
