Hi.

I got 3 HS4 carbs and just one engine(998cc) to fix. So I was thinking would it be possible to make of 2 single carbs one twin carb. Because basically a twin carb hs4 setup is just 2 single carbs, but the problem is that the 3 carbs are all for the same side (they're not mirrored). So my question is if anyone has experience with this problem or does anyone got some tips for making a mechanism for the twin carb setup? Or is it really impossible to make this happen? :)

It's difficult, as the bits you need to join together on the wrong side when fitted, and with HS's the float bowls get in the say...

You can sort of do it with HIF's but you have to manufacture the liks and the petrol pipes get a little confused !

Your best option for a 998 is to stick with a sing HS4, swap for an HIF38 or try a pair of HS2's which are more common.

If you do want a handed pair of HS4's then here's a list of some donor vehicles to watch out for...

MGB's, Marina TC's, Dolomite's

Unfortunately these are all now classics in their own right

As far as I know the castings for the front and rear HS4 bodies are the same, but there's a hell of a lot of parts that need switching, I'll check my SU bible for you.

I never saw the inlet of a hs4 twin carb. But the float chamber of a hs carb has a flexible gasline to the carb. So i could put the float chamber behind one carb instead of next to it. The only problem left would be the accelarator and choke cable (choke wouldn't really be the trouble). I could make a mechanism wich makes 2 cables out of one accelarator cable(from one cable to 2 cables, wich will lead to the 2 carb's). But I think it's the best to use a fixed mechanism build on the 2 carbs, wich uses only 1 cable for both carbs (like a normal twin carb setup). But I don't know how precise this mechanism must be, cause i don't got experience with tuning twin carb's. I also don't know how much room there's left behind the twin carb's, cause i don't know how much room the inlet will take.

I saw an article in one of the mags , a bloke fitted two motorbike carbs (38mm), this worked great because they had a two into one cable , i think they were mikuni carbs .dont know what manifold he used though .
