Ok I am guessing this is a bad earth but where do I start.

1992 Rover Cooper 1.3i

Side lights come on fine, Headlights come on fine.

When I flash (pull back the light column) the headlights say on full and the spots come on as they should, but the headlights do not go upto main beam.

If I flick the column forward the spots come on as they should but the headlamps go to side lights.

Any ideas where I should begin?

Thanks

Since the lamps are on except when you "flash" I wouldn't be looking for a ground problem. The ground appears to be working or the low beam wouldn't function.

The problem is more likely in the high-beam wiring and/or the switch. The only way to sort these things out is to use a volt meter (and an assistant) along with a a wiring diagram. You have to check for voltage starting at the headlamps and work back through the wiring and switches until you get back to the fuse box (if it's necessary to go back that far). As you move backward from the lamps you'll eventually find where the voltage "disappears".

Check the butt connectors at the front under the bonnet slam panel, it's the first place they go.

The butt connector on the blue/white (main beam) wire is the one you need. The problem is somewhere in the main beam supply wires from the flasher switch. The butt connector is the most likely place so start there and work your way back.

(Like DK said! :) )
