So here we are then folks - the 998 engine build.

About 3 weeks ago i decided the engine on my new car wasnt up to the job. So (from a previous project) i had a spare A+ engine sitting about (outside getting rusty bores :) ). So i decided to do it properly.

We went to Scholar Engines and had my block bored out +20 thou and got them to supply and fit all shell bearings and flat top AE pistons with a head skim. So by this time id already decided on a few specs:

PH2 camshaft Which im having serious trouble getting so thinking of a 997 cooper camshaft?
Duplex timing gear
Adjustable oil pressure
Standard 3.1 FDR
Standard head for a while then after a 212
Stage 1 with HIF38 carb and RC40 twin box system
Elec. fuel pump
Full recon gearbox (which i will attempt myself :w00t: )
Plus loads of other bits and bobs

Hoping for a good 45bhp+ when its finished (without the head change)

I had already spent my budget at Scholar's but when i saw it after work i was well chuffed :xxx:

The Workshop:

Ive spent the weekend stripping and cleaning the gearbox (using gunk), So you may see me asking loads of questions on how it goes back together as im none too clever on gearboxes.

Casing:

If anyone can advise on where to get a camshaft from please PM me.

So thats as far as ive got.
Ill update when i get some new shiny bits or ive done some work! :o

The Morspeed PH2 camshaft came the other day all nice and new! Was extremely quick delivery as well - Top service. Got A few shiny bits from minispares the other day as well. So its coming together slowly. I hope to get the camshaft bearings done sometime next week now the cam has come then i can get on a bit more!. Also, if no one minds, how do i know if my account is set up on minispares (with the discount) I think simon set it up for me but he hasnt confirmed he has, because im looking at spending £200 odd there so any money off is a bonus!

More pics to come soon.

Its been a while since ive done anything to the project mainly due to working weekends and nothing but hassle from the machining shop. Well anyways, today i got the block cleaned up and re-sprayed. I used nitromors to get most of the old paint off.

And wire brushed in the awkward areas (fins on these A+ engines)
http://i265.photobuc...07/Image000.jpg

I masked it up using a combination of masking tape and parcel tape which seemed to stick quite well. Didnt get any pics of this though.

So after an afternoons work i got it like this:

Its not a glossy finish but i like it personally. It was a very high temp paint (600 degrees) which is plenty (hammerite would have probably done to be honest).

And after sorting out the camshaft bearings the camshaft was ready to go in.

I also got the pistons in after trying to work out my Dads marking scheme which made all of about no sense. I also gotta ring up the Bloody Machinists again as they have supplied the wrong crank shells :D . But never mind.

So tomorrow i will probably be sticking the block back together and ordering a few bits from minispares if its up and running again.

Also does anybody know what the fat locating "pin" in the A+ block is called (the one in the corner) as it had to come out and i need a replacement.

I will update again tomorrow.

Ps. Sorry the pics are a bit large ill try to sort them out.

Looking good, but don't paint any of the machined faces that weren't originally painted and clean out the oil ways.

I think the part you're looking for is a dowel have a look in here

Yep its the dowel then, Thanks.
All the oilways are getting cleaned out tomorrow along with the machine faces which i will probably use sand paper or something similar.

Sorry all i can do pic. wise is post up the direct links as the pics. are too big to view on my laptop and i cant resize them on photobucket.

Not had an update in aaaaaagggggeeeeeeesssssss, as i have no money :) . But ive just ordered £200 of gearbox goodies so in the next few weeks i will be getting on with that. I now have to remove and install the pistons again as i did something really daft. The specs. have changed a fair bit from last time though:

12G295 Cylinder head
3.44 FDR
Uprated diff pin as it made sense
Possibly going for S/C drops if funds allow
Uprated clutch plate
And a Lightened fly

Being a 998, you may find getting SC Drops a challenge.
