remove the strap around the tank by undoing the bolt , remove the fuel cap , dissconect the fuel pipe or pipes and pull it side ways in to the boot then out through the boot lid hole .

You'll want to do this with a less petrol in the tank as poss. It is also possible to keep the tank connected, but not advisable.

i would get a freinds over and get him to hold it so you can steady it and not stir all the crud up, other wise youle end up having to clean you carb/carbs out.

yeah ive done all that but it still seems to be stuck towards the back top corner, is it the 2 thick hoses that go into the top of the tank that I need to remove?

There should be at least one breather pipe attached to the top pointing towards the inside of the boot. Make sure that is removed. If you're really having trouble getting the tank out, work at removing the filler neck boot in the body. This will make the opening a lot larger which will allow you to tilt the tank at different angles to remove it.

Don't worry about crud in the bottom of the tank. Yes, it'll get stirred up, but hopefully you're removing the tank to flush it out while you make repairs. If you don't do this yet, you should consider running a disposable fuel filter between the tank and your fuel pump.
