Luke, did you customise the brackets yourself? I already have the originals from the MK5 switch panel, chop and weld?
& for my next surprise, Dad and I are taking the block off next Sunday! in order to replace the Cam followers. Whilst the block is off we can inspect everything, valves, head-gasket etc.. & decoke it all.
I'm just hoping for no nasties sure it'll be okay as it did run sweetly before, no gunky white oil anywhere or funny coloured smoke out the exhaust.

I made the new brackets, but I don't have a picture unfortunately. They were made from a piece of similar sized steel but were almost flat, with a very slight bend in. You just need to measure the distance from the choke/heater contol hole to the mounting hole, to then make sure the holes in the braket are in the right place. Thanks for all the replies

I would think chopping and welding would work, but a bit OTT for getting the job done. I guess flattening them out and re drilling a hole would be easier?
let us know how you get on.

It will be the head off not the block ) and the head gasket will be replaced as a matter of course.

Roped in Dad today to help me split the head from the block, the engine is one thing I can't afford to make mistakes on.. and seeing as this is my first rebuild I'm happy to have had him help out.
First things first was to strip the ancillaries.
Everything off, and then the block mated back with the gearbox to make things easier whilst working.
Nuts & bolts off, rockers off, card waiting and labeled ready for the push rods.
View with the rockers off, push rods ready to be drawn out.
Block without the head.

Piston 1.
Piston 2.
Piston 3.
Piston 4.
Piston chamber, nice and smooth.
Head cleaned up with a wire brush on the electric drill, will blow out with compressed CO2 & flush out with parafin before mating.
All 4 pistons cleaned, details of one of them.
Block cleaned up as well, same treatment as the head.
All wrapped up, ready for the next stage. The block has also been wrapped.

Have you wrapped them head in cellofane for a reason? I only ask because it might let water condense on the inside and make the mating surfaces start to rust. Something similar happened to me and I'd like to see you avoid it .

They aren't tightly wrapped, so they've got room to breathe. It was purely to stop any debris getting to them. I'll go out tomorrow and smear a layer of oil on the surfaces just to be sure.

It might not even happen, it was just a concern.

I thought it was a bad idea too do that, I did it once too tidy up an old 998 head. It scored the surface, never did anything with it, but I doubt it would seal properly, without a good skim anyway.
I could be wrong though, it's just what I thought.
