how heavy is the whole engine assembly in kg's? and how many people could lift it? how heavy are the cylinder heads on there own? - would removing the head make a difference?

Deepends how strong you are! I can lift an engine no problems, the cylinder heads are not that heavy, are you trying to lift it into a car?

Very heavy is the answer.
If you want to lift it out and haven't got a hoist then you can take the head off and clutch plus transfer gear case then unbolt the engine from the box.
It is then possible to lift the engine out.
I used to do it this way when I was a young man but it was a struggle, possible , but a struggle.

I seem to remember they are about 95kg, without fluids. just under 100kg anyway. moving a fully built engine is simple for two strong men, lifting one out of a bay is another matter. I cant see it possible. lifting off a subframe is no problem, but there is not much to hold on to so getting one up and out of an engine bay would be a different story..

If your just moving it you should manage all built up with the head, just make sure what you use is ok, ie not things like fuel pump, they break..

have fun, remember straight back, bend the knees.

I know its less than the Vaux engine im putting in which weighs 128.4kgs. I have managed to lift engines into the front of mine without the front end on with just two people.

Fingers, toes and back. Wear Gloves, Steel Caps and keep your back straight and upright. wear old clothes too... or wrap the thing in a sheet before lifting. With correct tequnique, i can lift one in and out of the boot, to and from the floor on my own.. I have not done so for about 2 years.. i now use a hoist. it takes a lot longer but is far, far safer.
