mini is to austin like escort is to ford, you then have names like mini mayfiar which would be like escort ghia.

The way the names were use through the years changed a lot. Mini wasn't the dominant part of the name originally. It was Austin Seven and Morris Mini Minor. The name Mini stuck and has remained regardless whether the parent company was BMC (Austin-Morris), BL, or Rover. Therefore you could say that the basic car model became known as a Mini. All the other stuff around the name designated trim levels. On the old cars these weren't as identifiable "Super, Deluxe, Super-Deluxe", then there were displacement names "Mini 850", "Mini 1000". For a while the models imported here (briefly) by BL were just "Minis" (as long as you're not throwing Coopers and -S cars in the mix).
Perhaps your car is "just a Mini" without a "trim level name" like Mayfair, Mary Quant, etc. If you're happy with the car does it really matter?
