Can you change the diff with the engine in place. or does the whole gear box need to be removed.

Engine has to be removed from the car, but you can do it with the gearbox connected. Lots of bolts to undo, but it isn't that hard.

Sam's right, but if you want to change the diff for an alternate ratio, you're going to have to split the box from the engine aswell, to get the pinion off.
