my engine is 1989 metro engine,but the alternater is a rover one the model no has been erased but last digits are 79,so is this compatible with my engine
because it only generates 13 volts whwn its runin

more importantly than volts, is AMPs... but the bottom line is, If it fits use it

As GuessWorks said, fit is the big issue. Fan rotation is the other.
As for your car, measure your battery voltage at the battery with the engine turned OFF. The battery should be between 12-13v. Now start your car and have someone bring the RPM up to at least 1000 RPM. Making the same measurement at the battery you should see a reading of about 14.5volts. If you see a reading below 14 (or above 14) you have a problem with the electronics inside the alternator and need to have it looked at.
Over here, the best way to check an alternator is to remove it and take it to wherever you buy parts. Most stores will bench test them for free.
