Does anyone on here have any experience of using Kurust or any similer product that they can reccommend for getting rid of surface rust? I'm especially interested if you have used it a couple of years ago and had your mini sprayed since then and not had it start bubbling under the paint work yet.
You may have read my other post about needing to get rid of some rust on my arch and I really don't want to have to cut it out as it appears only be deep surface rust.
Thanks for any suggestions. ;D

I used a wire brush and then kurust on the footwells of my pickup and fooled myself into thinking it was ok until on further investigation the whole floorpan has had to come out. IMHO from reading advice again & again on this forum you have to get back to bright metal for proof that the panel is sound and then go from there. Give it a go!

Yesterday's topic here.

I used Kurust on all the surface rust spots on mine, but used a wire attachment to get the surface rust off first; then Kurusted the area. I also used it on the radius arms, hubs etc after shot blasting and it has worked extremely well. Its been about a year and the rust hasnt come back, but then the parts havnt seen the elements yet!! Just make sure u give all parts / areas 2 coats of Kurust and primer and paint as soon as Kurust is dry.

Hope this helps

i have used kurust before and used properly its great. I now use a different material from Wurth just because we buy from this company it looks to be the same stuff. It needs to be primed/ coated over once it has cured too many people put it on and leave it it does not create a water seal on its own. it is best to remove as much rust as possible every little black dot in the metal is rust so this stuff is used to hold things like that back.

Oh, so Kurust doesn't eat away at what rust there is, it just covers it to prevent it from spreading. It appears I have misunderstood its use

my advice would be to cut all the rust out and replace with non rusty steel.

i used this stuff on the bottoms of my windows and 6 months later i had holes come through.

the choice is yours tho . :)

Its makes the metal go blue! :) Think it changes the compounds of the metal..(not 100% sure though)

I used it as a temporary thing, but like blue redtop said, its probably best to replace the metal, rather than just cover it up..

Jenolite os the best stuff, turns rust into a "passive organic compound" apparently. I have used it and it's not come back, but that's only on very light rusted areas. Ideally you should remove all traces and replace with either a patch or a new panel. If that is not possible, remove as much of the rust as is possible prior to treatment, and don't let it dry out during.

This might help to show what I mean by being wary of the easy fix. My pickup's footwells looked like this

so I used Kurust and they looked like this

but a screwdriver through the floor at the top of the picture led to the discovery of wholesale tinworm
so I have to bite the bullet and get it all out

I stumbled across this guide to combating rust on the Mini Mag website about 10 minutes before looking at this. By the looks if it the article was in this months mag but I haven’t got round to buying it yet. Link below, hope this helps. (Moderators I assume links like this are ok, please remove of not)
