Hello everybody!
I just bought a 1293 A series engine with a 12G940 cylinder head. The head has been ported and features, Toughened crank(nitrided), racing pistons with modfied skirts, welded rockers, high lift cam, hardened seats and bronze valve guides, double spring valve springs.According to the previous owner it produced 85hp at the wheels(?).which stage could that be considered? 3d?
I was advised by the previous owner to try it with a better distributor(was running with standard), and possibly a competition head gasket(had the custom copper one).By the way(sorry for my ignorance) how can you tell the difference from an 11 stud head to a 9 stud? I intent to put it in my 1976 998cc mini using the same gearbox which according to haynes is identical. Do you think that it is a good engine? It cost me 100 pounds....not much i suppose.
Oh forgot to mention that it came with a weber carburator 28/36 (legendary according to some forums) is it good or i should look for something else?
Thank you....

Good buy for 100 smackers... but any engine you buy second hand, IMO, should be stripped and checked.. no point whacking in an engine only to have to take it would a week later becuse the big-ends have gone.

The gearbox will fill physically, but you may have an issue with the drop gears, especially if the engine is of a+ origin and the primary gears ( the one on the end of the crank ) will be different and hence will not mesh. Do you have a gearbox on the engine ?

The difference between an 11 and 9 stud head is the number of studs... ( as the name suggests ) the two extra are one each end of the head in the middle, and were on high compression engines.. of later modified engines, there is a great possibility that a 1293 may have been drilled for the extra 2 studs.

Only std 11 studs were on 1275 cooper S pre 71, plus other BMC variants like the Austin 1300 GT.

Cant remeber if those webbers are down draft or side, but either way I would change back to an HIF44 SU ( but then I don't understand webbers )

The engine didnt come with the gearbox. The gearbox that i have now is from a mini 1000(998) year 1976,so it should be A series.I just stripped the engine. From my inexperienced point of view it looks in a very good condition. The only thing that puzzles me a bit is the engine code.it sais GS 1001 on the block.I cant find that anywhere on the internet.Unless that is not the code....but I cant see any other codes on it.The guy that sold me theengine said that it probably came from a moris 1300gt.......I ll check again and try to find the code on the internet.

Thanks for the reply GuessWorks........

A 28/36 weber is a progresive twin choke downdraft , i had one on my old mini van , didnt seem any better than the SU , but i didnt have it set up properly.

Stick a piccy up, (Front Back Sides) Austin/Morris 1300GT engines were a solid wall version of the cooper S block and were 11 studs as std. ( My 1330 is a 1300GT block and are pretty much indestructable ) and if it is an A series rather A+ then the gearbox will fit on without any issues at all.

As for the engine number, the original will have been removed when re-bored, so it's quite likely that that is the mark from the engine builder. I think MED put engine numbers on theirs, and I know Jonspeed did

i have a 1293 cc single carbed 1" 3/4, A plus engine with k&n induction kit and it certainly does go well. estimated bhp is 75 or more. so if mines can do that yours will certainly be alot faster.

Sounds like a good price to me. 1293 are brilliant liottle engines, plenty of power and very reliable.

Block is A series and could be out of anything pre Metro days

Pistons you have are common low comp 8.8cr units. Ringsets can be got from minispares.com, or any mini specialist.

Clicky

11 stud solid wall block, and from the shape of the casting at the back, looks like Austin 1300 GT, has it got a single threaded hole right in the middle of the block at the back ?
