I tried to switch on my motor today, 1st time since I fitted it, and the smoke came out ;)
I have NO idea why, because all the plugs are in the right places as far as I can tell, there are NO shorts or frayed cables, the main power feed is sound, anyone have ANY ideas what could cause this?
PLEASE????

did the car start and run...bear in mind that if you have been fooling with your engine you are more than likley to have got oil and muck on your manifold...this burns off when you start up and will go away quite soon. have an extinguisher handy just in case

I mean smoke from the alternator! It hasnt got as far as turning over yet, I am using a flat battery just incase I have got any wires wrong so I wont necessarily melt anything.

you need a continuity meter which will be able to check and shorts to earth..

Have you tried removing the plug from the alt then connecting the battery... you don't need an alternator to start the car, just you'll be sapping power from the battery and it wont charge.. but you may find out if thr alternator is shot.

I have *almost* had the motor running now!
I found the problem :nugget:
A wire had pulled out of the fuse box.......:fear:
HOW COULD I MISS IT? There are only about 8 wires there!!
Ran it with the alternator unplugged. I think that thecarb jet is blocked, so I'll blast it all through tomorrow with something to clean it out!
