Is it legal to make the windows from plastic? I know that the windscreen has to be glass, but I am working out just how much WEIGHT the glass is costing me! I am running a 998, so I need to get rid of every ounce I can!
Already stripped out the interior, chiselled off most of the sound deadening pitch stuff on the floorpans, grp flipfront, cladding off the bulkhead.
All I have are a stereo and 2 bucket seats!
I would want to make the windows myself, as I have done all the other work on the car myself (other than the welding as I am not confident enough yet to work on a car).
Would the clear stuff from B&Q be legal? I think its acrylic.
**rambly post alert**
Windows: can I use plastic?

NO! The plastic glass you need has to be shater proof along with a few other legal requirements. There are a couple of supliers of the stuff you need and you can buy a car set for about £150 I think.
How much weight are you trying to get rid of? There are loads of bits that can be removed or even replaced with aftermarked bits to save weight.

Damn, ok! Good job I asked then! I am stripping EVERYTHING out that I dont want. I am trying to figure out a way to remove the heater without having cooling problems, as well as the whole water-flowing-in-the cabin thing!
Sorry 76 clubamn, I have NO money anymore, I am trying to sell some bits just to eat next week! I would love to buy a set of new doors because mine are rotten. But at least they r lighter
I have seen polycarb for sale somewhere............
Its a principle thing too, I want to be able to fix or replace ANYTHING on my car with very little hassle, not having to wait 2 weeks for some specialist company to find a set of windows, then asking me to sell a kidney to pay for it!

An old trick us grasstrackers used was to remove the heater , strip it down , take out the little rad inside and mount it up front in the airflow , this helps the cooling , saves weight and looks cool (like little oil cooler)
the reason they use polycarbonate for the side windows is it is scratch resistant , if you use perspecs it will be like your bathroom window after a bit

Ah, I see. Its tempting to have a go anyway, because polycarb is WAY more expensive than perspex where I have been looking. It'd still be cheaper to make 3 or 4 sets a year than buy 1 set of polycarbs!

I ran my 1330 for over a year without a heater, just plumbed the pipe from the head to the bottom hose... There's no reason to suspect that you should have any cooling problems doing, that, but if you are afraid, get a 2 core rad and all your problems will be solved.

i have no heater in my estate, but before when i had mny 1293 i used a later type heater matrix as extra cooling, i couldnt belive how helpful this was, esp as i was still using the old thou rad from the orig engine.
