Hi, ive a 1275 auto 95, just had new cv`s and balljoints done, engine and subframe mounts are sound, but i still have this knocking especially over uneven surfaces, could this be my suspension, im almost sure its coming from the left side...? this is a hole new ball game to me, but very keen to learn all aspects of my much loved mini..

I get that too. Sit in passenger side, and put your foot on the floor where the left floor subby mount is and you can feel it knocking slightly on every single bump (big or small), but you don't feel anything when the engine rocks, so probably not engine mounts. Incidentally both subframe mounts were recently replaced and there is no knocking on the right side.
I'll let you knwo how I get on if someone doesn't post a sensible answer

i only bought the car 2 mths a go, swivels etc were ment to have been done Nov 04, but when she went in it looked pretty much like they hadnt,£250 to sort that. origanaly the knocking was there every time im accelerated or decelerated, that is now sorted, thought maybe it was because i had got used to the noise, but im almost certain it`s still slightly there....

Accelerating / decelerating knocking is 99% of the time due to worn top steady bushes other steady bushes and or engine mounts...
Simple tst, grabo hold of engine by rocker cover, push back and forth.. if there is any real movement, then the bushes should be replaced, with new bushes then engine will feel almost solid in the engine bay.

if the main knocking of the engine rocking has fixed then this may no longer be the problem. However, while the engine was rocking it is possible that the lower steady or exhaust mount has broken or bent, on the bottom of the car. Either of these could cause a knocking still.

knocking on full lock, acc and de-acceleration could mean worn cv's or not enuff grease on cv or t'other end (pot joint)

I think the lower engine steady is on the rear left of the front subframe on some minis, which is roughly the right area? However I think they stopped using them here and moved them to the front right around 1979 so unlikely to be the problem....maybe worth having a look tho if your front subby has ever been replaced! Altho that goes for manual subframes and Im not sure about autos...

Had the both cv`s done with the swivels so i know its not that, done the rocker test, and theres only slight movement, providing i drive on a complete smooth surface were be fine.

Suspension arm bushes?

i have a theory, although it may take some explaining!!
Ages ago in my Clubby there used to be a knocking coming from the lower left hand footwell area. It was ok when on flat ground, but occured on any sort of bumpy surface, and also when slowly manouvering, either in forwards or reverse. The engine was fitted with 3 engine steadies, and the subframe had had brand new mounts, and all the ball joints and front suspension bushes were new. (ok, there's the background set up!)
So I figured it must be something else (obviously!), but couldn't figure out what it was. I just happened to have taken the carpets out of the car for some reason, and noticed the noise was quite a bit louder, and every now and then the sun would flash in my eye off a panel down near the floor on the n/s.
It turns out that the 'knocking' was actually the inner 'a' panel, ie that curved panel above the floor pan, where that little bit of carpet attaches to. It had a slight convex shape to it, meaning you could put your hand against it, push, and it would 'pop' in and out of shape. When the car was moving over bumpy ground etc, I guess the shell was flexing slightly and causing this panel to 'pop' in and out, hence the knocking!
So I got the copper/hide mallet, used the hide end and gave the panel a couple of hefty smacks in the right place, and it was enough to remove the convex shape, and the knocking was sorted.
I hope that explanation makes some sort of sense. I'm probably wrong with the diagnosis, but it might give you some ideas.

If it only occurs on rough ground then I'd suspect worn out damper mounting bushes.

I'm having exactly the same problem as the one below, any ideas yet?
