Realising that there's no decent speaker pods for sale, I set about making my own to house some 6.5" woofers. The photos below pretty much detail what I've done:
(n.b. this is my first go at using power tools or doing anything practical like this, so if I can do it, so can you! And sorry in advance for the amount and size of pictures)

Posted Image
Marking out..let the cutting begin!

Posted Image
Two baffles, two bases made up.

Posted Image
Drilling clearance holes for speaker-to-mounting-ring screws and also screw holes for securing mounting ring to baffle

Posted Image
Speaker mounting ring secured.

Posted Image
Making up supports to secure baffle and base together.

Posted Image
Me wishing it would all end!

Posted Image
Supports cut and sanded to required angle (an immense amount of guesswork really), and glued in place.

Posted Image
Base glued to baffle. Speaker magnet clears the base! (just)

Posted Image
Second pod made up (if you've been anal about measurements, it will be a lot easier to make this set of supports at the same time as the first ones)

Tomorrow: Fibre glass!

In the only place they should go in a mini, under the dash rail. Plan is to bolt them to that instead of to the wheel arch.

No idea what angle it is, I just kind of guessed and (luckily!) it worked out ok. The shortest and longest lengths of the supports if you're interested are 20mm and 10mm.

Not sure what to do with them yet, we'll see how they look by the end of tomorrow! I may end up trimming them though.

Quick question: Will I need to put anything inside the pod or will it be better running them as-is?

Just something i would like to point out - im no expert, but when you turn the speakers up, then will vibrate? Will they not potentially hit the base?

Apart from that - looks wicked!!

The speaker cone is the only thing that moves, whats really close to touching is the magent at the end of what they called the basket. The guys used some thick thick wood there, so the chances of movement there are damn slim! Could hold back a train with that :shifty:

Ouster, your weakest point in that build will be your sides, so make sure you whack on a fair few layers if your doing fibreglass only.

Heh...yes, with hindsight maybe some slightly thinner wood would have been better (I used 12mm MDF), but then again the passengers I'm likely to be ferrying back and forth to Uni every day will probably end up kicking them so it's good if they're solid.

I'll be using isopon P40, so it'll be ready mixed resin and fibres. Just stapled on some aluminium mesh for it to stick to, ready for tomorrows joy of application.

Any ideas about if I should deaden the inside before I finish the job tomorrow?

Is that 20mm and a 100mm? LOL

Progess so far today:

Posted Image
Pods trimmed in aluminium mesh ready for fibreglassing

Posted Image
The materials all ready - notice I'm using ready mixed Isopon P40 instead of resin and matting, I thought it would be easier this way. I used 2 tins to do both pods.

Posted Image
One pod done. May need a quick skim; we'll see what it's like when it's hardened.

Later....I choke myself to death with sanding!

Well, the thing is it's so much more satisfying than just buying some. Plus the ones you can buy are absoloutely cack.
Also, this is cheaper! I'll price it up properly at the end, but to completely finish both of them the project cost will come in under £25.

Edit: And the fumes are nice too! :)
