Right ive been stipping off a good rear subframe ive got, as im referbing it before it goes in Tenby. Ive removed the front trunions (that mount to the heal board) and just tryed removing the rear trunions but one of the captive studs sheered off!
It looks like the stud goes right through the subframe leg and i well attached. Is there any chance i can replace this as the subrame is usless without it and its the only good one ive got.

if i remember correctlly the rear mounts for the subframe are connected using nuts and bolts, into the boot, is this on your pick up, your talking about, and does it have captivated nuts to hold it on, if the bolt going into the captivated nut has snapped it shouldn't stop the subframe from coming off the donar car. if this is what you are trying to do..

the subframe will still be usefull, if the stud had snapped of in the subframe it is easy to get it out and there are various ways of doing it, if it is possable can you post up a picture so we can see where the problem is and help you further

No, its the shaft that the trunion bush goes on. The shaft is part of the subframe and the bush goes onto it and the subframe mount over the bush. I'll try to get a photo as im not very good at explaining.

I wouldn't want to try it myself, that's a fairly important stud and if your welding is even a little off it will dramatically affect the alignment of the frame.

Also if that fairly strong part of the frame snaps off easily what does it say about the condition of the rest of it?

Thats exactly what my thoughts were on this one. Its litterally just the treaded end on the studs that sheared off but its only been on a car a year so i wouldnt expect that. Must just be a really crappy patern part. Pitty to throught it away as its 100% rust free.

I've got a subby which I did exactly the same one, the stud broke, I've been huming and harring about replacing the stud for over a year now, beacase apart from that the subframe is a minter, and is also a genuine Rover item....The actual pin which the mount sits is still in perfect condition, it's just the threads gone...

What I was thinking of doing it drilling down the center and then tapping it and putting a long bolt down the middle and then weld it in place by drilling through the pin and the bolt and then mig welding the hole back up, and then taking the end of the bolt to create the stud again...

I've got the same problem been doing quite a lot of extensive welding to the boot area and had to remove the bushes so i could weld a plate in, upon removing the nut it managed to shear it off, subframe is only a couple of years old so i'm a bit *Drunk or yellow human water*, that said the subframe is kind of solid mounted anyway through the towbar.
I'm not gonna change the subby im just gonna weld the centre of the nut on so it holds the bushes in place and stuff it.

Sounds like this is a comon problem then. I like your idea guessworks, should work great if the stud can be drilled straight. As thats exactly what ive done i think i'll give it a go, that way theres no worries with alignment.....bloody minis.....
