I'm in the middle of stripping the gearbox I have at the moment, I need to undo the big bolt (39mm) thats on the end of the gear shaft (sorry, don't know proper names again!), I was wondering if someone could let me know how to stop the gears from rotating so I can remove it?

should be 1.1/2" if you mean the nut on the speedo end, although the same applies for the 1.1/8 at the clutch end, just make sure the interlock spool is removed then push the synchro hubs over to engage 1st and 4th at the same time. As per HBOL (old edition, new one misses all this and loads of other good bits out). You ll probably find you need to at least stand on the box because its very tight, or even jack up a mini and lower one wheel onto the ribs of the upside-down casing.Have fun!

Yea, have been wacking it with a mallet, I feel like I'm having a go on one of those 'Test your strength' machine at a fairground!

Next question then, whats the interlock spool and how do I remove it?

I think I got the new Haynes because it doesn't tell me how to strip the gearbox or diff, so I'm doing this all blind!

mallet whacking is fine (oh yes!) but you wont be able to do that with yer torque wrench when it comes to doing things up! You really need a fat basturd or a car to put on the box. the interlock spool is basically the extension of the rod change, where it goes into the box you need to remove the detent spring and then turn the rod anticlockwise as far as it will go to move it away from the arms that select 1-2, 3-4 and R. The detent spring and sleeve, before you ask, are on the right of the sticky-out bit just in front of where the rod change would join onto the spool. The sleeve is sometimes stuck so might need persuading to come out but have a look and you will see what i mean, when and only when this is out will you be able to turn the spool all the way, until then it stops at the 1-2 lever, if that makes sense.
A 'proper' HBOL would help, but i guess GW is the resident 'box expert (so to speak....)!

As mentioned, move the selector hubs to simultaneously engage 1st and 4th to keep the shaft from rotating. One of my friends puts the box upside down on a piece of cardboard, then lowers his truck onto the box to hold it while he removes/installs that nut.

Be careful when shock loading that nut. If possible, use a long cheater pipe on an appropriate wrench. Whacking with a mallet is on the edge of danger, DO NOT use an air wrench (don't ask me how I know).

Jammy please don't continue this without a manual. I don't mean to cause offence but you are asking some very basic questions about the early stages of stripping diffs and gearboxes lately and it only gets harder from here, especially when shimming the diff which is VERY important. Haynes have taken it out of the main manual but the transverse A series is covered in the Haynes gearbox manual. Get that or the Rover manual or Guessworks CD but please get something. If you build this gearbox without having any of the important data then there is a high chance that it could fail when you try to drive on it and that could result in a broken car at the very least, you or other people could get really hurt if your diff explodes or the mainshaft snaps (which is surprisingly easy to cause) when you are out on the road. You could have already weakened your mainshaft by smaking the nut with a hammer, which is completey unneeded if you just have the book to read. Gearboxes are important and intricate machines, don't do it blind.

Yea, I was thinking the same Dan, thank you for your concern. After thinking about asking someone to scan the pages in the Haynes manual detailing the strip, I thought to myself that the CD i had got from Guessworks should have it on, and it does!! So I've carefully read over the procedure last night, will read it again this morning, and have the pages in front of me when I'm doing the work!! Not looking forward to get the nut off the third motion shaft though, sounds like its going to take a bit of doing, think I'll employ the use of my trusty scaffold pole like I did with the flywheel nut!
