i tried to change my main engine mounts yesterday, but i couldnt do it with the engine in. theyre bolted to the engine with allen head bolts, and theres no room for the allen key, so i had to put it all back together again! how easy is it to change them?

Normally its a *Female doggy* of a job, they either come out easily or a real nightmare because of limited space etc. Sounds like yours have been put on the engine before it was put into the car if you can't get an allen key in them. Only option is to lift the engine out or patialy out till you can get to the properly.

hacksaw a little bit off the allen key, and put it in a ring spanner (or a ratchet ring if you have one).....sorted!

there's a lot of allen headed bolts on the planes in work, so i've had to use this method quite often!

cheers. thats a good idea with the allen key stub. the haynes manual says to take off the bell housing to get to the mount when its off. seems like a lot of work! I'll take the engine out and stick a new oil pump on whiles its out. its probably quicker anyway

Allen bolts ! what age mini is it.... but engine mounts, jack under sump, bell housing off and radiator off, not that difficult, but on these later cars with all the cr** ooohh sorry modern extra stuff in the engine bay it becomes more interesting.
