am i right in saying that the sparkplugs need to be removed from a head before any work is carried out?

if so, can you explain why?

this would be VERY helpful. cheers guys.

its a theoretical question..

so if i bought a recon head which had the following done:

Cylinder head is skimmed, Inlet and exhaust valves are re-lapped to their corresponding valve seats, The inlet and exhaust ports are fully ported to optimise gas speed and port velocity, The addition of anti-reversal ratchet on the inlet ports, The addition of high flow, three angle valve seats, The standard inlet and exhaust valves are modified, New valve stem oil seals.

and the sparkplugs were rusted in (as theyve not been removed during the work), would you say thats wrong?

cheers guys

Sounds a bit weird to me mate, would be dubious of it if I was you. Best thing you can do is get someone who knows what they are looking at to have a look at it with you. How much is it for sale for?

Heres a couple of questions you want to ask
If the plugs are jammed, why are the jammed? Have they been cross threaded or maybe the wrong plugs.

If the plugs are rusty, then the rest of the faces will be rusty too. Where has it been stored and for how long?

Why is it for sale?

How much has it been skimmed, you need to find out so you know what compression your gonna be gettin from it.

How much meat has been taken out of the ports, have they taken it out of the right places and more inportantly, have they broken thru anywere, especialy the push-rod holes.

Who did the porting and valve seats?

How many miles has it done and what was it used for, has it had a hard life?

Try and get some pics up and we can have a look for you...

the work couldnt have been done without the plugs removed, if its in good nick and has been done properly then it sounds to be a nippy head!

if the head is allready off then the spark plugs dont need to be removed to do any work, though it does make it easier, if they are, the head you are talking about sounds good, but why do all that work if to a head if the plugs are seized in it. i'd ask a lot more questions first, if you do buy and want to remove plugs. then place some oil down the threads for the plugs and leave for a few days, remove oil then use some kind of penetrating oil, leave for a while then try to remove plugs. might need help, holding head steady to do it.
