first make sure the rear drums are adjusted up properly and quadrants not siezed, if the handbrake is still too loose then its the usual arrangement of nut and locknut but its right underneath the handbrake lever in the little bracket welded to the transmission tunnel. Jack rear of car, 4 clicks handbrake up, loosen locknut, tighten primary nut until rear wheels lock, release H/B check rear wheels turn freely, if so nip up the locking nut job done! But deffo do drum adjustment first!!

While we're on the subject does anyone know what a 'fly-off' hand brake is?

it would be like this if ur button was permanently pressed in. therefore it wouldnt lock out so you could park but would be used as a driving aid in competition such as rallying :D

makes things like autotests etc much easier too, no fiddling around with a button on the handbrake!

Almost!

You can lock a flyoff handbrake. It works the opposite to a normal one in that you have to press the button to lock it. If you don't press the button it won't lock so you have a nice rally handbrake but if you do press it then it locks where you leave it. To unlock it you just lift it a little.

So are fly off handbrakes ok to use instead of the normal one? They're used on the Monty Carlo aren't they, which means they have to be ok to drive on public roads....

fly offs don't improve performance, it just means the handbrake lever doesn't lock in the up position, so you cant use your handbrake to park the car.

The 'old' mod was to drill thru handbrake lever and button (pushed down) and fit an R-pin or split pin, so i'm told by my dad.

They can lock as I said (if you use a proper fly off handbrake pawl not just modify the existing) which means it will hold your car. But technically the MOT requires the handbrake to lock automatically so it's a bit dodgy for legality.

It is true of course that you can modify the handbrake so that it won't lock, but a proper fly off handbrake is new parts to fit into the handbrake lever which changes the mode of the lock.

I wouldnt change my fly-off for a normal one again! You dont realise how much time you lose at the lights by having a normal one. Just tap and go!

OK i want one!! Its always a pain when u dont release the handbrake fully after using it to turn sharply! Slows you down a bit!

Anyone got a link for this? How much?
