Hi all
I have Minilite wheels fitted and the paint has started to peel away and bubbling. The wheel are in brilliant nick besides the paint so would like to have a go at painting them myself, are there any special ways I need to prepare the wheel and what paint would i need to use?

Thanks again
Jeff

Hi Jeff

I've repainted wheels in the past, the pricipal is the same as bodywork.

Clean all the loose paint off
degrease the wheel so its spotless
sand the wheel to give the paint a key to stick to
then spray

I would suggest many layers of paint with light key sanding between to ensure good adhesion as wheels are likely to chip more than anywhere else on the car, also a good idea to put a few good coats of clear lacquer on it so if it does chip it does not go through the paint

Im tempted to have mine powder coated as that bulletproof and would not chip

if your doing anythink like that, you need to bare metal the wheel ... paint stripper will work and user wire wool to get into the grooves to clear the paint off

always ensure that all the paint stripper is off as it will strip the new paint before it sets !!

hope that helps

Cheers
Phil

It is esential to use "self etch" primer over bare alloy !
I used spray tins of alloy wheel paint to do the wheels on my mini , they looked great , i didnt laquer mine and some strong alloy wheel cleaner brought the paint off again  but it did remove all the brake dust :D

excellent point woody, I aways tend to use an etch primer ... even for bodywork, just to make sure its got a good key to whatever is underneath

cheers

Thanks all for the advice, one small question if you could help please. When lacquering any paintwork in the past the finish is good for a few weeks but then gloss fades and lacquer goes a whitey colour spoiling the finish, what might I be doing wrong.

Thanks
Jeff

If the clear coat / Laqure goes a white / Orange peal type colour. Then you are applying it too thickley, and the coats arent dry when you apply the next coat...

Laqure needs to be applied in Very thin layers, leaving a good 30 minutes between each layer.
