Whats The Law On Rear Seat Belts?

hi could anybody tell me the law on rear seat belts. When i got the car it didnt have and in the rear but my mate got pulled over this morning and got a warning over it.
My mini is a 1985 city e 998cc.

Only from 1987. If they are there they must be worn, 'n if there aren't any you can't carry kids in the back.

rear lap belts did not become standard until October 1986, and as your car is a city, it was almost certainly not made with them and therefore you don't need them.

the police person needs informing of his mistake, otherwise he can't better himself and achieve his full potential ;D

AKAIF, the law mae it compulsary to fit rear seat belts only in 1987... However, if an earlier car has been retro-fitted, then it is a legal requirement to wear them at all times...

If anybody under 14 doesn't wear one, it is the driver's responsibility. If Over 14, it's your own responsibility, but the driver may also be fined...

Yes, putting the police in their place is always a good idea ;D

and if any car was made with rear seat belts before 1987 you can't remove them and have to use them... yes ??

May be worth bring some info along with you just in case, also to get your mate off the hook if you think that his car shouldn't have rear belts...

I was just erring against being gobby to one of Her Maj's finest - but didn't really think Tom was being any more serious than we are.
