Hi everyone, just wondering if that fuel breather hose and charcoal filter is needed, im pretty sure after 26 years of fumes the charcoal filter might be a bit saturated lol would it be ok to remove it? I guess I might need to put a breather filter onto the outlet on the carb? Or can I vent to air?

Hmmm hi mate.
Is this the cylinder type metal casing that is on the end of a pipe coming from the carb that kind of blocks a screw of the float chamber?
We've just been down to cornwall in mags and noticed that when we had the windows open, we got overcome by fumes...

I was wondering what that cylinder thing is or does. If it is something to do with fumes being reduced...perhaps ours is knackered as well. ? .

I'll be interested to see what people reply mate.

Cheers for now.
Goose.

This may be worth a read, and apparently you can clean the breather in petrol once removed.

It's a different bit.

I don't know what the service life of the charcoal canister is, no doubt if it has one replacing it will be in the service schedule. It's also a closed loop system so even if the charcoal is long since defunct it will still gather fumes until they are fed to the inlet manifold

Yeah you need them, I cleaned mine by soaking it in degreaser for a couple of hours, then ran a hose pipe through it for a little while. The outlet is 1/2" which is excact;y the same size as hosepiep.

They should then be connected to the engine, sometimes through the carb and sometimes into the air filter.

I personaly have removed all the inside of the canisters, looks a bit like rough wire wool when it comes out. I have then connected the cannisters into an oil catch tank which, will obviously catch any oil deposits, then this vents into the air filter to burn off any contaminated air.

Sounds like the tappet chest cover breather, if you're referring to the same canister I have on my car. I'm not exactly sure what letting the tappet chest breathe accomplishes (as I'm definitely no mechanic), but I deduced the name from this part description:

As well as this one:

And afterward was able to find the part here, you can check it and see if it's the part you were talking about:

Hold on...just figured what you mean by the tappet chest cover...

this cylinder thing is far bigger than whats in those pictures...and from feel only, i dont think there is anything connecting the bottom of it to the tappet cover...

I'm doing the timing belt cover gsket this weekend, so rad coming out, and hopefully i'll get a better look at this bad boy.

will let you know. cheers. goose.

What are you all on about, charcoal? filter?

What these are are flame traps, to stop any flames caused by backfires igniting the oil fumes in the sump. Inside, as noted, is a wire wool material, to my knowledge these never fill up and will last forever, cleaning the inside just seems pointless really.

If you have your breathers connected to the carb or airfilter, then you need to have the flame traps in place, if you are venting to a catch tank then you can chuck them in the bin.

Goose, that is an oil separator on the crankcase ventilation system. It's best left as it is. blow down the hose if you want to check if it's clear, the canister is just full off wire wool type stuff to trap oil droplets.

Right ok mate, i wasnt gonna just take it off, i just wondered if it had a shelf life of less than 27 years...it'd be worth replacing it. But general word appears to be it'll be ok forever so i shall knock it off my list of theories into the fumes in the car.

Cheers mates.
