hey all
I was wondering what yall think to the possibility of suicide doors on my mk3? i cant think of a good reason why it wouldnt work as its already got the post in the middle and there are no back doors so i wouldnt have to worry about that. Ive been thinkin about possibly getting some fiberglass doors and i cant think why i wouldnt be able to just fit some hinges in the rear post to the back of the door. Perhaps even some of the mk1 exterior hinges just on the back of the door instead? the only thing i can think is the rear might need abit of reinforcing? any thoughts? Thanks very much

Know reason you cant with a bit of thought and a decent welder. Easiest way is like you said, GRP Doors and exterior hinges. (Might need to stick the hinges on a lathe or something to get the curve correct) Bit o reinforcement behind the hinges, a big plate would be best to spread the load.

Just make sure you are very careful not to warp the 3/4's. And also make sure you take lots of pictures :D

hmm, i think that ones goin in the idea bank for later, the only other thing i can think of is tryin to track down some reinforced latches as apparently the suicide doors need really strong latches so it doesnt fly open lol. Thanks very much for the help i think im gonna look into it abit more.

Np mate.

Didnt think of that... Hmmm i suppose so long as you have some decent rubbers around the door seal so that it holds tight it shouldnt be a problem. But if you do change the locks and catches, i'd suggest a bolt (Like you get on bathroom doors) rather than the standad type.

This is the sort of design i meant, but obviously internal and a bit beefed up :D

Clicky

I have seen a picture of a Soft Top Hornet or Elf, it had Suicide doors and a Hot rod theme. Matt black, red steels and white walls, and some pinstriping. Looks the tits :)

Well thats cool atleast i know for sure it can be done, yeah i came across some electronic bolts on a US site for suicide doors so i think ill have to see, might look at doing both the catch and have the bolt as an extra security measure.

My dream project mini as these :D Shame its still only on paper! It would be awesome to see some of these in person, especially if you can do it all in metal.

yeah i wouldnt mind if you can, be nice to see how they did it because i was just thinkin about attaching the mk1 external hinges to the back instead of an actual kit for them but im sure theres something wrong with that plan i just dont know about yet lol

Think I'd have to put solenoids on and no handles as that first yellow one just looks a little out of place with the handle just sat there. Love the hinges at the back though >_<
