yeah 20w50 is best for mini engines and boxes. using 10w40 or 10w30 in a mini is criminal lol

Still don't know weather I should be using 20W/50 or 10W/40 for short winter driving (20W/50 is suppost to be better for the A-series engine but 10W/40 will warm up quicker).

Im annoyed that having changed the oil to the recommended 10w/30 i now have problems with my gearbox and as its automatic its going to be very expensive to have the gearbox fixed.
It could have been a coincidence but i know what i will be using in the future, it,l be the 20w50 everytime

auto boxes are really fussy about what oil is in them, change the oil to a 20w50, and change the filter at the same time. you may find the auto box is fine afterwards, as its surprising how badly 10w30 affects them.

Ive been using 10/40 in my mpi engine for year and a half now? 16-18k miles last year, much the same projected for this year. Hate to throw a spanner in the works of some peoples opinions here. Even Rover manual states 10/30w recomended. Getting changed every 6-7000.

But redhotmini didn't say what is best for short, daily, winter driving. Also not sure why using 10W/40 is "criminal" as mine runs perfectly fine on it, even on cold start.

Yup, my Haynes Manual and my local All Parts store recommend 10W/40! :xxx:

I wish people would just make up their minds! :w00t:

Well all the enthusiasts who actually own Minis on here pretty much agree that you should use Mineral 20/50W. Those who work in auto parts stores that are reading out of catalogues will say 10/40W is fine.
