Still can't fix the column in place!

Stupid pinch bolt won't find the groove in the pinion! It's driving me crazy, can someone please suggest to me how to fit it?

It's such a tight fit and the column is kinda closed up (if you get what I mean, the pinch bolt wouldn't really pinch it together much more!) compared with my old one. This means that the olumn is now completely pushed onto the pinion, and no amount of pulling will raise it up a bit to allow the pinch bolt to find the groove!

Since it's such a tight fit woulв it be okay to leave the thing without a pinch bolt? There is absolutely zero slack, no play up/down and in rotation!

It's making me go insane. I'm going to try remove another steering rack and column (both from the same car) so they should go together well, but until then would it be alright to drive the car around without the pinch bolt?

Failing that , i'll still have to lift the column off the pinion when chanign rack and column... any ideas how I can do this ? Levering it off the floor just bends the floor

I'm going crazy with this car. If I don't get everything needed and fix it within a month, minis are out!

Stick a fat screwdriver in the slot to open it up a little, that makes it a lot easier.

The slot is COMPLETELY closed up. I can't stick a piece of paper in it, let alone a scredriver

Stick a piece of tapered rod thru first to line it up.Don't drive it without a pinch bolt, I had a bolt break in one and you don't want to go there.
