If it was registered before 7th January 1977 you don't have to pay road tax.

Sorry to correct but it's if it was manufactured before 1st Jan 1977. A car could have been registered well after that date but still be eligible if it was made in '76 - you just need to prove it.

I was told by a person who does professional restorations, that the police being mostly younger now, see 'old' minis looking so dated, that 95% of police assume that the car is entitled to black and silver if the letter is just at the wrong end. He advised carrying the legal ones, and saying that you forgot to change back after leaving a show, and make sure you're carrying the wherewithall to change quickly. He also said none of his customers (he keeps up the maintenance) have ever been done for this particular offence as far as he knows.

 

Guessing the police on duty for the London to Brighton have been specially briefed on what to look out for? So maybe that's a time to go legal, at least on the way there, as would  the MOT, as it's more than the garage's licence is worth to pass you. They don't care what you do after you leave, but they have no option but to abide by the MOT rules or VOSA (who arrive regularly for random checks) could remove their licence.

Back to the OP, I personally think black / silver plates on a car not old enough to have them pre 1973 / 5 ( I can't off the top of my head remember which), look ridiculous!
I cannot understand the logic in doing that personally

Just think that in the late '60's and early '70's we were putting reflective number plates and rectangular rear lights onto Mk1 Minis to make them look newer and safer at night.
How times change.

I've been running with these plates for several years now - passed two MOT's and not been stopped anywhere

I got stung by anpr 4 years ago on l2b , it detects wrong colour in police cars now.

You’ll be glad of a reflective plate if you break down at night. I’m old enough to remember my Dad following the fashion in the mid seventies and replacing black and silver plates with reflective on the family Wolsey Six and on his TR6.

My Grandson & I are restoring a 1986 Mayfair as a replica of a Mk.1 998 Cooper (all except for the doors & small rear window).

We are going to buy a 1963 or 1964 number plate, A or B suffix, and make them up in black & white. You can buy a plate for c.£250.

We reckon that the chances of having any problems with the Old Bill are minimal, especially with it being red with a black roof, either none or narrow G'p 2 arch extensions, 'Austin Cooper' bonnet & boot badges, Mk.1 boot lid,  Mk.1 rear lights, 10" Minilite wheels, Lucas SLR700 spotlights, sliding windows and a Lucas 5" foglight as a reversing light.

They just look "wrong" to the eye with the single letter at the front. One of my absolute pet hates on any vehicle. Bit tacky, like fake louis vuitton handbags etc....
