Beautiful work there bud, blackbird should have some nice low end grunt as well, a very useable machine

yeh , i saw one on you tube and wanted one! then i discovered how much they were to buy? not being able to afford one i have decided to build my own

Blackbird was a 1100cc Honda bike possibly CBR can't quite remember that, was before the Busa the fastest production bike for a stage also i think
There's one similar on the Mini Extreme DVD's in the Gulf Blue and Orange colour scheme, and he was plumbed for nitrous with button gear selection.
It also mentioned that Bill thought they moved the engine to optimise weight distibution and therefore compromised the drivers position.
Anyway...I'm waffling
Excellent Project......
Keen to watching this progress to the road.
You Going to be running Fibreglass/Carbon Fibre anywhere to make the most out of this engine solution or that the least of your worries for the time being?

Blimey, you hit the ground running in this forum! I'm still trying to take it all in. Could you rewind a few reels and talk me through it? I thought a blackbird was some sort of cellphone.

there is a lot to explain, but if you need any info just ask i will be happy to tell you,
i will post a detailed picture describing what bits i have used and what i have had to machine on the lathe.
vauxhall F16 diff and shafts
b&c sprockets, sprocket blank ( 26 quid )
vw polo outer cvs and outer shafts
vw polo drive flanges
the rear callipers are half citroen saxo vtr (rear) and half pug 205 front. so i can have a handbrake and vented discs.
rear discs are front vented vw polo
3/4 by 3/4 rose joints with alloy inserts for the rear arms
standard injected blackbird engine.

Despite the prices people ask for Caterham Blackbirds, the Blackbird engine is not considered to be one of the better bike engines for a Bike Engined Car (BEC). Bike engines do not expect to stay vertical and be subjected to high lateral G, as in a car installation, so it's a bit hit and miss as to what works and what doesn't. Generally Blackbirds are condsidered to be at risk - even dry sumped
Obviously you don't agree with that, so what's the positive side?

The Honda Blackbird is a superb engine, the knuckle heads who cut 50% of the sump, then wonder why the engine has oil problems amazes me, they wouldn't do it to a pinto so why a Blackbird?

i agree , i was going to increase the size of the sump and baffle it, i also intend to link the oil pressure switch directly to an ig nition cut off , so any loss in pressure and the engine cuts,
those cateram things have the engine in sideways anyway, i dont think i will have any trouble unless i hit 7 G in the corners but thats not very likely.
the blackbird has a deep narrow sump, look at the pics.

the rear arms are built by me,for the main hub carrier i used a c02 bottle (5 1/2 " od) the bits that hold the rose joints were made from solid bar ,drilled and tapped to 3/4 unf then welded into 1" 1/2 cds tubing . the connecting three tubes (2 striaght and 1 bent ) are just normal 1"1/4 od 3mm wall tubing . they are in primer to hold back the dredded rust while i complete the rest of it.
the drive hub carriers are made from a sollid alloy billet as are the diff bearing carriers, the drive flanges and rear wheel bearings are 1990 vw polo 1.6 petrol.
i purchased a solid bar of alloy 5ft long and 6" thick at a cost of around £120 and have unlimited access to a lathe, i spend many hours in my dads machine shop blunting all his cutting tools

What are you doing for chain adjustment?.....I have a smilar project planned here in the U.S. using a CBR1000 motor......
i am banking on the chain not stretching much as it is so short , but all i am gonna do is slip shims in behind the bearing carriers when it does stretch as i am going for strength on that particular part.
