Blimey, what a bummer that is.

It's ridiculous that that's all happened to be honest.

Actually, I've just re-read it all. It's a PITA, but ultimately they've done nowt wrong.

It's still a bummer, but there's nowt you can do about it now other than cancel it all.

I did the same thing with direct line a few years ago, All I did was claim that I had told them to cancel it verbally over the phone and they bought it!!

Ended up getting a refund, might be worth a try?

If you're not good at filing it might not help you. Do you still have the letter from the DVLA informing you that their records no longer show you as owner? If you have then you have grounds to get a refund if the policy was in force last year.

Yep, as previously stated, I know I have no one to blame but myself, I except the fact that legally they are doing nothing wrong and with a little less carelessness I could have prevented this.
On the whole I believe what they are doing is immoral, But lets be honest plenty of people make a lot of money (a lot of them in insurance) out of immoral behavior.

Perhaps, if all other avenues have been exhausted I might give that a try.

So you havent know for long then tel?!
Thanks for your comments, none to helpful though really mate. To be honest your comments seem more like your gloating that you knew something I didn't. I know your going throught some stuff mate but behavior like that wont win you friends, and its becoming the norm with you. Its not really something I would post on a mates thread who was having the same difficulties but I guess you never have been that tactful. To me it doesn't seem to be an appropriate thing to post really but as everyone always says its a free forum and your free to post what you want within reason.

The information concerning when I sold the vehicle should be available from the DVLA. That might be my first course of action. Perhaps that coupled with shiftyseamus suggestion of claiming I told them to cancel the policy might be a mix that best works together. I have till tomorrow to decide what course of action I wish to take, so I will give it some thought.

A refund of the amount spent on insurance I dont need would be nice, but as much as I will try to fight it I wont hold my breath.
I might just be that I have to chalk this one up to experiance and shoulder the finacial burden.

Might be worth a call to the insurance ombudsman and see what they say?

Usually that gets the ball rolling!!

I would stick with claiming that you've verbally cancelled the policy and see how that goes.

Might be one avenue to explore. I will certainly explain the situation to them and see where that leads me. I am not expecting it to lead far, at the end of the day banks have enough on their plate at the moment and I dont normally have the ideal response from my bank when I need them, I doubt they will want to get involved.

Is that a governing body responsible for oversea insurance? I haven't heard of that term / name before.

Yup, its the body that kicks the insurance companys a55 when they screw up!!

If you look at your insurance policy the address/contact details will be there somewhere.

If not I'll try and find it for you.

Sometimes just mentioning that you're gonna complain to the ombudsman will be enough!!

If I were you -
1 - find out from your bank how much money has gone since the policy should have ended. (by the way do yo not have online banking? i recommend it as its easy to sort out stuff like this)
2 - check the policy (if you still have papers) to see what would have been required to cancel - could it be done verbally? in writing? do they as for the certificate back?
3 - call the insurers tell them you have just found out paymnts have been made for x months on an old policy you cancelled. depending on the answer to 2, tell them you called to cancel or wrote a letter. Writing is better as calls may have been recorded, a letter is more likely to have been misplaced/badly filed etc.
4 - dont get angry, its not the phone monkeys fault - try to win them round to your point of view - more likely to get results than a shirty attitude.
5 - if no joy, contact your bank (assuming payments were made by direct debit) the DD system has certain guaranees. I have no idea if they could be used to your advantage here.
6 - make a formal compaint in writing, sent special delivery to the insurers. The grevance olicy should be in the back of the policy booklet.
7 - still no joy, try the insurance ombudsman, although I think ths may have little effect
8 - write the loss off, sulk a bit, then carry on.

Thats a good plan of action Dave.

I can see you're a fellow serial complainer!!

I've usually found the ombudsman to be helpful.

Good Luck Neil

i READ the small print. its not gloating. gloating would be me bragging that i get cheaper insurance than you or that i can afford 2 or 3 cars at once. and i have been driving since i was 19, thats just over 6 years ago. enough time to learn a few things about insurance.

pm me if you think i have a problem.

Actually yeah, it may help that you canprove that you sold the car, therefore weren't using the policy at all.

Hope you can work something out with it mate.
