Hi,

I need some feedback from anyone whos fitted an R1 into a Clubby. I have seen that some kits have fitted a cush drive, is this needed? Also what suspension and diff. works best. by the way the car is currently a 1.1 auto if that makes any difference.

Cheers,

D

I am very biased, but pro-motive all the way.

www.pro-motive.co.uk

diff comes with the package with options, and my spax adjustables have been great.
you'll also need to consider :

break upgrades, front and rear in the ideal world
upgrades to bottom arms and tie bars are a good idea.
injection fuel pump / tank / pressure regulator / filter / return fuel lines
digi dash or use R1 clocks with suitable speedo
some wiring to do - pro-mo can prepare all this for you but it cost extra
exhaust system - manifold comes with the kit but you'll need a good maniflow system to finish it off
a chain lubrication system is highly advised
a sump baffle conversion / addition is worth considering - mixed feelings on this one but for 35 quid not a bad idea

the clubman front end will give lots of space to play with, but a flip-front or removeable front is a good consideration, others have done this and if i ever did another I would have a removeable front end.

The cush drive has had consideration at pro-mo but I'm not sure where they are at with this as an option.

call the guys - both darren and Phil are very approachable and will give you all the info you need.

good luck :)

Thanks for the info!

Im looking at getting a carb engine if possible, has the chain drive been reliable? As it currently has drum brakes, I also want to fit 4 pot vented discs with 10" minilites, is this possible? Ive seen another kit which has reverse gear and cush drive, but it is more expensive too.

I've only seen the other conversion in the magazines, never seen one up close and personal - each company seems to stand by its word, all I can vouch is that mine without a cush drive is fine. nice to drive, great acceleration and no sideways nastiness now we got the steering sorted.

You can get disk conversions to go with the 10" wheels, but in my opinion vented is best - I'm not sure if vented disks and 4 pots can work under 10" wheels, there are conversions that use solid disks and 4 pot calipers though. Phil and darren will know a lot more on this than i do.

the carb engine is nice - alex's rig used carbs and it was lovely - very smooth, and an easier conversion with less wiring.

If you're really serious wait till the bigger shows this year coming, you will see both variants i am sure, and probably a few new ones coming through, try and get test drives if you can and make your decision from there. You will also see the Z cars and probably the new geronimo rear end engine conversion package.

some firms are funny about test drives, but if you're spending that kind of dough I'd insist. Be sure your happy and confident with what you are buying into. The chain drive has had issues, but constant development by the guys has seen improvements, and touch wood recently its been great.

Martin I think the other conversion your talking about is the white standard looking cooper which has not got a chain drive. (cush drive?) the guy who built this was opposite me at castle combe and I had a chat with him for a while. the engine sat quite a bit higher and was mounted the same what round as in an r1 rather than ours.

On the subject of brakes you can fit minisport calipers and 7.9 discs under 10 inch wheels but not minilights. they need to be copys like GBs or a totally differant style. As i wanted genuine 4.5 minilights i had to fit minisport 4 pot cooper s calipers and 7.5 discs but it stops fine.
My engine is a carb and im happy with it.

Wow, thats mental!

Been away from the Mini scene for a while now and I'm fed up of the current batch of German sports cars, clean Minis just look so cool. Can't wait to get mine back on the road, I think I will get the respray done first and run it around on its 1.1 auto till I have the funds to get everything ready. I spoke to Darren and he seems like a top bloke, I might wimp out and get the reverse gear though.
