Unfortunatly fronting is the only way many people under 20 can get insured for a price under the value of their car. I'd say at least 90% of them have something untrue on their policy anyway to get the cost down. Nothing major but I bet there are a fair few with "kept in a garage overnight" on their policy when its actually full of rubbish.

When i first passed at 17, my insurance was £700! That was on a limited mileage classic policy with all mods declared. Its a stage 1 998!

My renewal quote was £680 and that'll go up £80 when i put my 1275 in.

I suppose thats what i get living in manchester though. Insurance depends on all sorts, so theres not much point asking other people what they pay.

For example one of my friends whos 18 and has a years NCB pays £2300 on a 1.1 saxo, which he is a named driver on his mums policy! But then another friend whos 17, has a 1.6 16v fiesta zetec S and has claimed twice on his insurance in a year and only pays £1800!

Sorry, but have to disagree. If you can't afford the insurance, you can't afford the car! I've always declared everything on my policies, and paid through the nose at times (£2k was my highest premium). If I couldn't afford to pay that then I wouldn't have chosen to commit fraud by lying to my insurance company, I simply would have driven something else until such time that I could afford to drive the car I wanted. Which is in fact what I've done with one of my current cars. I used to do an insurance quote every 6 months waiting for the premium to come down to a sensible level, once it did I went out looking and ended up buying one! ;D

Also, yes, kit car insurance would be ideal. It is very cheap and you can do all manner of modifications. The only problem is that firstly, you'd have to stick your VTEC'd Mini through an SVA, and almost certainly end up with a Q plate, and then you'd have to find an insurance company that will give a kit car policy to someone under 21.

Well peronally I'm not fronting and my car spends more time in the garage than out of it, but as the poster above you said, when someone is paying £2000 as a NAMED driver for a 1.1 Saxo (I'm assuming its this bad because of the area of something with high theft? Possibly Afghanistan at that price?) and you want them to get a cheaper car? I have a mate who pays £1500 for a one litre Saxo and his car is worth about £300. He HAS to have the car to work, whats he supposed to do?

I'm lucky because I live in an area with little or no crime, my car is usually in a garage and I only have to drive 2 miles to work so I can stay inside my 5000 mile limit on my policy. MANY people my age however simply cannot get insurance for a sensible figure and they wonder why so many choose to risk life without it?

I'm not talking about people TOTALLY talking rubbish on their policy, like people swapping 1275cc out their car and replacing it with a 998cc at the scene of an accident cause the insurance don't know what was really in it (yes, seen it done), but many are doing this "fronting business".

Like i think Q M said, if you want something custom, just get a normal mini, customize it with lets say, some awesome wheels, nice bodywork and engine bay.....id be interested in looking at that at a show rather then some normal mini with a vtec under the hood.

So...your buying a SERIOUSLY fast car....to drive normally....cause you don't agree with driving fast?

So....your paying a fortune, losing the sound of a Mini....AND your not going to drive it fast?

Just out of interest do you have a VTEC Mini? If you want something custom get a 998 and put a custom gear knob on.

No sorry I didn't mean it like that.. yes I probably would drive it fast but I wouldn't do the conversion just because I wanted a fast car. I would do because I want to try it out!
Make sense?
And I wouldn't buy a VTEC mini I would do it myself, because that's what I'd want to do... try the conversion myself.
And when I said I don't agree with driving fast I meant ridiculously fast and risk a crash... I want to be a safe driver!
Anyway no I don't have a VTEC mini but I am considering the conversion...

I'm confused by this sorry... I don't understand how a custom built kit car can cost less to insure than a standard car?
Surely theres more possibility of a crash because in general kit cars are a lot faster?
And someone would be more likely to steal it?

Someone please expain why it would be cheaper to insure!?

people seem to be putting their views accross as to what they think of v-tec minis and not actually answering the boys questions, if HE wants to have a v-tec as his first car and HE can afford it then there is no reason why not. Q M you say why bother to have a fast car if you dont drive fast, have you ever heard of track days? Just because he is young it wont mean he will drive like a male member, i know people with 998s that drive like lewis hamilton, on public roads. People should stick to answering the guys question.

Im only guessing here, but maybe kit car insurance is cheaper because firstly, maybe people dont tend to steal them? (you aint gonna steal a kit car to sell on, as i wouldnt of thought they are worth as much as other cars). And also, maybe they are GENERALLY fast cars, they are built lovingly by owners who dont want to crash their pride and joy they have spent years building... just some thoughts ;D

I think you right  Thanks!
Yeah people... I don't want a ridiculously fast car so I can drive ridiculously fast... I want a VTEC Mini because the conversion sounds like a bit of challenge and something I'd be interested in doing... over the years as I gain confidence and experience I will begin to drive faster..
I'm even possibly thinking doing what Jobu did and not actually using until I'm 19 when insurance would be cheaper and I have experience driving ;D

This statement has kinda annoyed me.

There is a reason why under 21s find it hard to insure a car... Its because they cause most of the accidents on Britains roads!!!

Telling people to lie on their policy is the only way of reducing the price is bang out of order and is technically fraud.

Named drivers found to be using the cars more than the insurance holder are not covered. I know this as in my first accident the driver who caused the accident was a student at uni, was a named driver and the policy holder was trying her best (his mum) to blame other parties.

The first insurance for a 17 year old will be expensive. Find the cheapest quote and go with it... It will not go down until you start earning no claims, or taking the pass plus course.

You will struggle insuring a 1380 or a vtec mini. Buy a simple 998, start buliding up the no claims, enjoy what a mini is really about, gain some road experience, start customising it to waht you want, then consider doing the conversion.

If you want a prespective.. my first insurance quote for a 1275, all mods declared, age 21, Female £1100 fully comp.

Quite possibly. Also, having passed the SVA means the car is up to a certain standard. Modifications to normal cars don't need to have any kind of scrutineering, so how to the insurance companies know how well they've been done?! There is also the conception that a Q plated car is worth less than a 'normal' car.

At the age of 23 I was paying ~£300 for a Q plated fibreglass Mini that I could have done pretty much anything to.

Because young male drivers (boy racers) cause most of the accidents statistically.

Insurance companies increase preimiums on certain aspects.. being male is one of them, being under 21... and in the news paper today those caught driving 'without due care or attention' (basically if your caught with something in your hand like a sandwich or an apple, tuning your radio and its got as bad as being caught laughing while driving!!) face higher premiums... in some cases as much as £88.

Nothing you can do about it...
