Bottom line of insurance is - Declare EVERYTHING that deviates your car from standard condition - anything not declared voids your insurance - it's illegal and there's no two ways about it. Yes, you might get away with it - but it only takes one Savvy inspector to tick the box and that's it - if you're within the 2 year probation period then your insurance is void, your licence is revoked, you'll get 6 points and a £250 fine.

You might even find that some of the modifications don't affect the premium - but they'll want to know about them believe me. Unfortunately looking at the list of mods you have, you will naturally find it hard to get a good quote - insurance brokers will take one look at your age and then see 'loud speakers, stickers, big wheels, fibreglass panels and bucket seats' -these are typical of drivers of your age and you will instantly be stereotyped as boy racer. It's a sad fact but one that can't be escaped.

Having insurance is for everyone on the road - not just yourself, declare everything - or take it all off and drive a standard mini for a while.

good luck :P

When people say "I'm not going to crash", it doesn't matter how good a driver you are, it only takes some idiot on the road to cause an accident. Might not be your fault, but the insurance company will still be coming to look at your car to assess (spelling?) the damage.

I always say declare everything because thats how I am, "let them know everything then they haven't got any ammo to come back against you if you claim" I always think. Footman james are pretty good with mods, I think they are more bothered about performance enhancing mods rather than asphetical (spelling?) mods. Have a word with your insurer and ask them to put it in writing if you dont need to decare them.

Edit: Some online insurance companys will not find you reg, need to enter it manualy, take note that mini could be under rover, austin, leyland etc...

Paul.

If your not going to declare mods, especialy stage 1 kits then theres no point in having insurance at all, the moment the insurance have a glimpse at your car they will make your insurance void, and if the worsed happens they are going to want to see the damage.

They will go over it with a fine tooth comb, especially as your a young driver. Not worth the risk IMO.

Paul.

I'm not saying its reccomended or giving out advice but my brother crashed his saxo vtr, they came round to inspect it, looked at the area of the crash (os rear wheel) and that was it, they went. Didnt look inside, under the bonnet or anywhere apart from the damaged area. This might not be in every case but was in ours. (THAT WASNT ADVICE) lol

As retro has just said you MUST declare everything. Dont forget the insurance company isnt really to bothered about your car, to them it is just smal fry.

They are however worried about, for instance, the £100,000 Aston Martin that have just hit that will require £20,000 to repair and another £20,000 that the driver is trying to claim for personal injury (this is all hypothetical of course)

They would also be over the moon when they turn up to inspect you car and say you havnt declared that aftermarket steering wheel your insurance is void and they are not paying a penny. Now tell me where you are going to find the money to repair that persons Aston Martin.

DECLARE EVERYTHING!!!!!!!

Try direct line. At 17 I was able to insure my 998 for £1150 third party fire and theft on my own policy.I had changed the car from auto to manual. Going on my own policy was good as it allowed me to get my own no claims bonus. Now two years laters I am able to insure a 1.6 escort fully comped for just over £500.

I would advise that you declare everything. My mate Dave had major problems when he had an accident and hadn't declared that he had put a cd player in. That was the only change to his corsa and the insurance company didn't want to pay up for anything.

Remember that every time an insurance company has to pay out they are not making money. They will try everything to avoid paying. If you have neglected to mention something to them that is a good enough reason not to pay.

Try finding a local insurance broker and give them a call - you can tell one person about all the mods that you have and then THEY will go around the houses and find the best deal for you. Try to think of them as being a super advanced Confused.com. :)

hi;

you could always try admiral, as they let you declare mods pretty cheaply. also the staff are helpfull in my experience with them.
in my mini's policy it states i can have up to £500 of in car entertainment before i need to get extra insurance.
so you may find (though please check with an insurer) that you don't need to declare everything if it's covered by the general policy.
though in that case i doubt you'll get your speakers replaced if they're nicked.
but it does mean most decent insurance will let you stick in a cd player without paying 20 quid a year for it.

you should realy call up insurance co's yourself with that list and ask what bits they care about and what they don't.
normaly if it's not on their computer (8ball gear knob etc) you'll get away with it.
