ok ive now fully recovered from my escapades at angelsey and have had a week on the new chassis
ive decided to keep the old chassis to show just how well the car took the impact
the new chassis was going to be out in 2010 but ive brought it forwards insted
i have to say im pretty excited about the new car
we are using a full size mini shell BUT we have cut it off by the bottom of the door frame so theres about 15mm below the bottom edge of the door itself
im running 50 mm ground clearance under the whole car as opposed to 3.75 ins on the sprint chassis i ran last year
overall the roof height is 1.5 ins lower than the sprint was when both cars are at ride height
ive lowered the engine two inches in the chassis and my body weight which is a good chunk of the all up weight of the car has dropped 1.75 ins
im going to try and get to mallory park in three weeks time hopefully to give it a shakedown run
the big idea is to run ground effects and aero package on the car eventually but i may not get all that sorted before mallory
the car looks the dogs sat in the workshop dummied up if it goes like it looks then i will be well happy and it will give me a head start on next years season

carnt wait to see the new car it sounds like it will look perfect, i love to see steel shelled minis so low,
its really hard to belive that it will be an improvment on the last works chassis.
looking forward to the photos.

just one question

why have you decided to use a steel shell instead of the fibreglass shell?

the car is actually a modified monte carlo shell
i had five on stock and thought it would be easier and quicker to use one of those
that was a quick decision that turned out to be more work than i first realised
i built the chassis and dropped the body over the top then found i needed to lift all four arches to clear the wheels as we were running the actual shell 2 inches lower than a std monte carlo
if you lower the whole car/shell then theres no where for the wheels to go in bump and the tyres were touching the arches with the car sat just on its wheels at ride height
ive been getting up at 5 am and working non stop on it for the past few weeks till 10 pm
we finally got the car into the paint shop for some filling and fettling ready to paint
im hoping that its painted for the weekend so i can final build it next week ready for mallory park
its looking very good with the big arches and wide side skirts ive been trimming weight off it as much as possible even going to have no passenger door handles or hinges saved over a kilo just on that alone
already found out its a bugger to work on if you want to jack it up you have to run it up onto some planks of wood just to get enough clearance to get a low line jack under it
well worth all the effort though as you cant help but admire the cars stance and aggressive looks
im hoping to get some photos of it up here if i can remember to take some its just crazy here at present and i keep forgetting
maybe somebody will take some at mallory for us ?

Looking forward to seeing the new car Chris.
It's a testament to the build quality of your kit's that you walked away from that shunt.
It would be very interesting to see photo's & details of your new cars build, especially for the racers or future racers among us.
I'm starting to work on the shell for my hillclimber, this forums zcars build pages have been great for ideas. Although I'm sure you wouldn't mind sharing a few of the 'works' cars secrets among the rest of us!

Adam.
