i am fitting a new engine but the bottom fan belt wheel looks damaged is this hard to change?

Do you mean the crank pulley? Is it about an inch thick, black and heavy looking with a large nut in the middle? If yes, then thats the crank pulley/damper.
What is damaged about it, if the V groove is slightly bent from where someone has tried to leaver it off in the past, then just bend it back into shape. If you need to take it off, then undo the large bolt holding it on and use 2 levers opposite each other to work the pully off, they can be tight tho so be patient and work your way round the pulley sliding it off evenly.

the problem is that there is no grove for the fan belt and a metel disc is loose behind it. the disc is not attached to anything. i assume it will need replacing. thanks paul

Sounds like it. If your just cahnging engines then use the one off your old engine.
