The key is, STANDARD....
if a mini is standard then it should not be too bad irrespective of engine size, modifications will bump your premium, and also reduced the number of underwriters which will insure your vehicle.

But like guess works says, standard is your friend, as are parents or anyone else you can get on your premium as second drivers. I added my parents AS SECOND DRIVERS on my insurance and it knocked off over £100! But not as the first driver, because that's insurance fraud!

...£1800.
give footman james a call, really nice and helpful. see what they can come up with for you. If you go on a classic car policy then you have to join british mini club (£20 a year)
Thanks 4 that, when you say standard, can you just explain to a newbie over here how i get one with alloys and sports arches and class it as standard what ones will i need.

One with sportspack arches and alloys as standard would be one of the later MPI minis. which would be a 1.3 litre

1275 spi - bucket seats, door cards, grill, maniflow centre exhaust, grooved brake discs, fogs and spots, high level brake light, deep dish alloys, arches and sticker alterations
for £1600 tpft with quinn direct with pass plus when i was 17, and then £800 the year after with them with the mods declared, (its the way you sell it to them, eg exhaust, its only the back box and its tailor made to "FIT" a mini and grooved brake discs (overheated when braking at the end of dual carridge ways, so i fitted grooved discs to help the cooling" then i changed to footman james on a limited milage, classic policy, 3000 miles, tpft £375 (im at uni so i dont need it all year round) all mods declared again! BUT KEEP THE ENGINE STANDARD FOR A FEW YEARS!

ok, to run you through it there are 4 more common engines in a mini, there are others though, but they arent as common:
998 carbed
1275 carbed
1275 SPI
1275 MPI
the carbed engines are the older engines, have a carburetor, and the SPI nd MPI are the more modern engines, injection engines, SPI is single point injection, and MPI is multi point injection (sometimes known as Twin Point Injection) the injection engines are the later ones, the sports pack coopers were the last of the minis, and are all MPI, unless they arent genuine sportspack minis! SPI were just before the MPI minis, and then all the earlier minis were carbed. The carb minis are easier to tune the engine, but arent as reliable in cold weather as they dont like starting as easy! but people like them because the engines are easier to tune.
Obviously the number is the CC of the engine, so 998 is basically 1L and 1275 1.3L

forgot to say do people find classic car insurance comps are better or worse
I'm 22, and haven't been able to get classic insurance yet because of my age, got to be over 25 with a few classic companies even tho the mini is 30years old :S
for £1600 tpft with quinn direct with pass plus when i was 17
Would definately recommend pas plus. When I did it it knocked my quote down £400.
My first year for a 1000cc with non standard respray and alloy wheels was something like £700 on my own for the first year with Norwich Union.... 2nd year £400 and then third year my mini was in a hit and run accident so my insurance got mucked up then.
I'm now 22, got loads of mods on my mini and hoping to pay £450 Fully comp with mini valued at £4,000 fingers crossed in a couple months with a company called HIC...
